just wondering what it is like as i have got a promising interview on tuesday and wondering if you could give me a bit off insight into life on a rig

 

What job are you going for ? and on what type of rotation ?
Ive been offshore for 61/2 years now, was 2 on 2 off now 3 and 3 it takes a good bit of getting use to as you do miss alot while away.

 

I'am applying for jobs aswell. roughneck/roustabout. but hard to get interviews..

 

not sure a good mate is high up and it him i goin to see and it pretty mush mine if i want it all i know is i will start at bottom any ideas about the money how mush can you earn at the bottom like i say i will find out more on tuesday

 

I take it you will either be going out as a roustabout as thats the bottom level. Roustabout is on deck , general cleaning, and working with the cranes normaly around 25/28K.

They are shouting out for people justnow but it still seems hard to get into ifyou have no exsperiance.

 

Also depends if it is a job with a drilling or production company or a service company. If its service then there is often no set rota.

 

i would be interesed in a career on the rigs. Currently working as a hgv mechanic, just don't know how to get in touch. Anyone know who i could apply to?

 

check out the oil career website, its not just the rigs that you can get into when wanting to work offshore though there are loads of different lines of work. The problem is for new people wanting to join the industry its very very hard unless you know someone that can get your foot in the door for you.

 

Have been trying to get onto the rigs for a while now. Done my greenhand roustabout course, survival & my medical.
It is hard to get a foot inside the door!

But as already said they are looking for people with exsperiance.

Have sent loads of cv's out and all you get back is "sorry there are currently no jobs that suits your exsperiance". Does my nutt in!

Met a guy who works as a driller who took a whole load of my cv's away with him so hopefully fingers crossed!

Neil A; What do you work as offshore? Who do you work for?

 

I work for Transocean as a Snr Mechanic. Sarted off as motorman did that for 31/2 years then two years as mechanic and just got my Snr grade in the last few months

 

Is there a website that gives you an idea of the jobs that are available?
just out of interest I would love to give it a go but the misses gave me an ultimatum before that got off the ground lol

That driller I spoke to works for trasocean & also have a friend thats a roughneck that works for them too.

 

I was with Global Santa Fe but we have recently been taken over by Transocean, problem with that is they are now the biggest drilling contractor in the world, and its not always best working for the biggest company.

Yip north sea on a rig called the Arctic 4.

 

is beer banend from the rig? how many hours do you work a day and is it 21 days in a row or is there odd day off? Take it you have internet access do you take your own pc? Do you have your own room or share? got any pictures you can post up? oh and lastly, is there females on board? have you shagged any? lol

 

No drink on the rig or for 24hours before the flight(ment to be ), some rigs are now no smoking either.
12hour on 12 hour off for the 3 weeks so 84 hours a week.
There is limited internet access and phone access on my rig some of the newer rigs have wireless access. Luckily i have a pc in my office
We have our own cabin where 2 people share but on back to back shifts, but some of the service hands have to share on shift depending on crews.
There is some females on board but even after 3 weks you wouldnt

ive been working offshore for 3 years now i work for halliburton and ive been with them since the start of the year doing completion & intervention tools ive never worked a 2n2 or any similair rotation i go away do the job come home i average about 3 weeks a month working away its good cash but you do miss home i done my rgit myself and found it VERY hard to get my foot in the door its near impossible unless you know somebody offshore allready.
sometimes you have to bullshit on your cv to get a start but most people with a hands on job like mechanic or engineer etc would have no problem its just getting the interview thats the hard bit but once your foot is in the door its easy street you can basically pick what job you fancy doing and apply for it ive worked for 3 service companys now but im sticking with this company they might not pay the best but they are the biggest service company in the world so at least i dont have to worry about work drying up lol and doing 3 weeks a month offshore it aint buttons you get in the bank either i average 4k to 5k a month before tax etc i couldnt earn that working onshore unless i started selling drugs.

Do you have radio operators or such like on the rigs?

 

Aiiiiiii there certainly is, they do the helicopter admin/radio op and other general duties.

ive got ONC and HNC in mechanical and electrical engineering, would this be adequate to get me into a job such as ROV pilot technician or similar?

Is it best to get your survival training off your own back before applying for jobs?

last week in our local paper there was a large feature on ROV training at a centre in Fort William. You can sit a 7 week course to gain qualifications. It was then 95% of the people who went through went straight to jobs and the other 5% was more like uncontactable than no job. FUCK KNOWS what it'd cost and i bet its not cheap! as for jobs without a survival, you'll prob struggle these days as most people do off their own backs.

Fort Bill course is around 6k-8k and in my experience those who have done it get treated with disdain, sometimes owing to them arriving thinking they can do it all!!!!

HOWEVER, there are 2 very tidy Lithuanians on here right now!

You get some of the usual 'workshop' mentality on board with some arrogant tw@ts thinking they own the rig and have no mannors. I just look and laugh at them in their own sad little world and cheer myself up that I'm not like them. Even better when they don't understand your local dialect. PMSL!

I've been on platform with good comms, but one right now is utter sh!te! 1 computer for 100 ppl and the mouse is now fooked and I've had to change the control to the keyboard! Also only 1 phone line for service companies and 1 for drilling crew. They have to collect call all of their calls, but I get on with all the radio crew so get to use the service business phone to call home.
They have wireless, but most IT companies of the service companies have blocked getting access to the wireness network!!!!

Oh, and the power has been cut numerous times over the past 2 days! That means delays to runnig the completion!!!! Shocking condition even thinking how much the rig is costing per day ($206K for this one)

As for the jobs, if your not fussed which company you would work for, then send your CV into every drilling contractor (GSF, Noble, etc) there are LOADS out there. Just do a search online.
As an interviewer, get as much mechanical skills on that CV as possible & promote all of your other skills. Create a CV based on the job you are applying for - don't just create one CV for any job.

Funnily, I hear Mud Engineers have an easy time - this one on board just reads mags, books and surf's the net all day!!! Easy money did you say!!!

 

 

Oh, as for survival courses, best to contact the company who you are applying to before putting in your CV. My company doesn't require a survival course prior to employment, as if we want to employ you, we'll pay for you to go through the course. It's the skills and personality that we look at, not just because 1 person has a survival ticket and the other doesn't.
