I've got an Impreza STi... the one in my signature below, and its a great car, starts everytime, goes well enough and puts a smile on my face when I take it out for a blast. I bought it when I got pissed off spending money on old cars. BUT Its not that special, it feels like just another car really.

I had an RS Turbo a couple of years back and although that was nowhere near as quick as the Scoob, it felt better to drive with the old skool torque-steer and raw bean-tin driving experience etc...... I'm currently thinking about changing the Impreza cause I've had it over a year now, done about 9k miles in it from when I bought it new and like I say, I'm not totally 'into' it like I was with the RS.

I know that I'm lookin back with rose tinted goggles on at my RS Turbo and that I dont remember the numerous times the thing never started or went tits up cause of some small niggly problem..... but I'm considering another RS.

Always wanted a 2WD Saph, Escort Cossie or 3dr Cossie. I dont want anything mentally tuned.. something around 300-320bhp would be all I'd want.. would a Cossie be a reliable enough car at these levels, providing its been well looked after and all the supporting mods have been done to support the BHP upgrade. I dont mind the odd wee problem here and there, but not wanting to get out of a reliable 2007 car into a car thats going to shit bottom ends, turbos and boxes left right and centre every few 1000 miles.

Am I stupid for considering this?? I know I said I got pissed off spending money on old cars, but do Cossies really cost THAT much to keep on the road if they're well looked after and only do 6-7k miles a year??

Grant if you want torque steer and a bit of a rawer drive i would go for a focus rs over a cos. Cosworths are getting on nowand even at the power level your talking about you will still get the normal , sensor failures and ither normal problems that go along with a old car.

 

if your doing to stick to stage 3 then yes it will be reliable.. maybe the odd sensor failure but if you change them all to start you will be fine. just make sure the engine is fresh and your away,

 

i forgot to say stage 2 dosent last that long

 

Pound for pound stage 3 cossie is a brilliant road car,just buy the best you can,mines been totally reliable in the 3 yrs ive had it.

 

if you buy the best you can buy then you wont have any troubles; stage 3 will be fine

my only advise is to by a decent one; get it set up by someone like MSD or MAD etc and get them to change all the sensors.

try and buy when whereby you know the owner, or history such as someone off here

 

i use my cossie as a daily driver and do approx the same miliage as you and apart from a head gasket caused by my own stupidity it has been totally reliable

 

for 6-7k you cant go wrong mate

decent stage 3 4wd cossie j-k plate, get an MSD closed loop chip and wasted spark conversion....job done

the focus RS is a great car but i do miss my old saff

 

i bet the scoob is horrendous on fuel! mates 03 doe 160 odd miles to 65litre tank?!?

Chop, yea, its pretty steep on the fuel.. although its better than before I had it mapped, used to be 160-ish to a tank driving normally with a bit of boosting. Now its mapped, I get around 190-200 miles with the same sort of driving. Whats wrong with RS Turbos mate.........

If you guys know anyone with a Cossie that would be interested in a deal with my Impreza, then point them in my direction.

gingeRS, what are the closed-loop/wasted spark things?? I've heard people mention them, but not too sure what they actually do..

rst would feel SOOOOOOOO bad to drive after the impreza! it would feel like the shit old ford that it really is!

 

Just make sure you've got a really good every day car, and buy a cossie for your fast/fun stuff!

I thouroughly reccomend a nice Avensis. I have one, it's bloody brilliant! Just need that project car now.

 

i know of a moonstone one, rondells, koni's, engine rebuilt not long ago. about 380 bhp but can bede tuned

i would check and see what your car would sell for-it may make you want to keep it.the values have really plummeted recently,IF you can sell it.

however yours is a very nice car,so there should be someone out there for it.

Sounds to me the Scooby simply isnt modified enough.

At mo it can do that performance with ease, it needs more to make it a bit sketchy.

RS's feel more lively purely as they struggle to tame the performance at lower bhp levels.

A big performance Scooby will make you shit your pants just as well as an RS.

 

I reckon it will be the biggest mistake in your life, cosworths are now weekend cars, if you fancy some raw back to basics like driving a go kart felling then try a evo, but IMHO an 07 plate sti to a 20 year old cosworth is just utter madness unless its a second car.

 

Stavros, I think you're right mate.. if the Scoob had a few k thrown at it, then I'd be pushing 450bhp and 450lb/ft and it'd be a right handful, but I'm not sure about going to that level on a nearly new car. Plus, every time I see or hear a Cossie, I feel a bit jealous of the owner and the urge to get one gets that wee bit stronger.

as355f1, it would definitely be a 2nd car mate.. and it'd actually come off the road before the salty winter roads appear, so the annual mileage would be pretty damn low.
