The best deal you can get is to buy the model with Windows read the license for WindowsXP and it states if you decline the license you can get a refund if you decline it (do this) demand a refund for Windows as you paid retail for the laptop you are entitled to a refund for a retail purchase price for Windows and then install either the Xandros Linux the eeepc comes with or another distribution saves you about 90 quid

Don't mistake them for desktop replacements as a portable system for the occasional email and letter along with surfing they are cracking.. they are simply what laptops should have been in the first place imho... small, low powered, light and most importantly truly portable.

The difference is that if you see someone sitting with a laptop in a bar or cafe its usually taking up the table, accompanied with a massive special bag to carry it in.. while the person using the eeepc you generally would not notice due to its size

as said, theres going to be a massive insurge of ultra portable notebooks, i like the HP mini note, but this doesnt use the new chipset which is coming out for them! im waiting till christmas and seeing whats about then!

 

I found the eeeeeee to be slow and tacky... But it's good in that it'll prompt other decent manufacturers to being out cool stuff.

Bearing in mind Sony have had a range of sub-notebooks for years but have always been a tad on the expensive side.

 

i found the eee machine to be a bit tacky aswell, but as you say it seems to have worked, as every manufacture are making them now on the back of the eee sales!

 

The 700 as stated was a little slow but a lot of the performance issues and screen issues they fixed in the 900 imho
As the system runs with not a industry standard processor with regards to power, anyone who try's to run Windows on them is going to be disappointed and find it lacking greatly.
Its like trying to run WindowsXP on a mobile phone or PDA, the limitations of the architecture just makes it stupid thing to do.

forget the 700 and get the 900 with Linux and its perfectly usable for what it is intended to do and be.

Refund from who? Have you actually done this? Was it a ball ache?

 

I did it, and have done it on a number of occasions.. and the windows license states to do this in the first paragraph

If you paid retail for the product you are entitled to the retail price for Windows.

Ive personally had no problems getting a refund as I attached these URL's when I requested mine along with the appropriate copy of the EULA where it states this.

A mate of mine gave me a demo of his 4gb 7" screen model at the weekend, I've always hated the whole Linux thing but I was well impressed with it.

I didnt think it was slow at all, it booted and shut down incredibly quickly, browsing was as fast as anything else I use.

OpenOffice was very quick to open

The speed at which it dealt with BBC iPlayer was well impressive, Open Office handled any file format I cared to chuck at it, it even has a PDF writer built in and a web cam with Skype pre-loaded

Superb bit of kit for anyone travelling around, especially if you stick on one of those USB2 Laptop Drive Caddys and run a proper hard drive you can take all your music and porn with you for those lonely nights in cheap hotels.

Has an external 15 pin vga connector and 3 x USB2's so you can easily connect a wireless keyboard and mouse, the wireless LAN seemed fast enough but there is a wired option.

i have got a 4gb i installed xp on it works a treat, i also have one of the pay as ya go broadband modems so get net anywere


since ive had it 3 months ago its only been used twice

 

what broadband modem have you got ? Is it any good ? I've been looking at these for a while and have since mixed reviews

i bhought the 3 pay as ya go, top up a tenner and you get 1gb to use in a month, if you do no downloading or view vids you can do easy 8 hrs a day surfing and emails etc, i think its fantastic, but as i say never use it lol
