the 5th driven gear is the one that you are talking about. you won't need one if the person taking the box apart does it correctly. it's only that they are very difficult to remove without chipping the teeth that people have needed to replace them and they are in scarce supply. i rebuilt a t5 box at home and managed without needing to replace one.

i've been told that 9 out of 10 people enjoy gang rape

so how will you know that one you buy has not been heated and fucked up when removing it previously?

Unless 5th is actually worn due to knackered syncro and crunching into gear.

Didn't notice any mention of the 5th being required just because the original will be bust on removal. Are people jumping to conclusions ??

without a specialy designed puller 5th gear is hard to remove so people cut it off and smash it off and buy a new one

shouldn't matter where they are roosie, a company is either professional or they're not. fair enough they may not have experience with the t5, but your first post suggests that 'your local man' does, and it seems he cannot get them off without breaking them. that to me is not very professional. it can be done as me and tony are saying, so if i were you i would either get him to make a special tool and take care when removing it and do the job professionally, or i would take it somewhere that can (or at least if they can't then they should pay for the new gear needed because of their inability)

we are talking about the 5th gear main shaft not the 5th gear lay shaft which is the one with the synchro hub
the 5th gear main shaft is an interference fit and has to be heated to a specific temperature to be fitted.
The 5th gear lay shaft is on needle rollers and slides off
