Default Audi A3 - Help needed desperatly please.

Hi,

I own a Mk6 Escort Si and have found this forum really helpfull in the past...

I knw it's not a FORD but would be really greatfull for some help on a mates car, he's got a W reg Audi A3 65,000miles that has just gone in for the MOT, the mechanic has just told him he needs a new engine as it has faied on his emisions, I found this totally bollocks infomation, the car drives stop on doesn't use any oil water and for 65,000 miles on an Audi I just find it very hard to believe.

Before he sells his arse tonight in the local cottaging club can anyone help with what he could possibly do before replacing the engine??

He did say it needs a godd service???

Many thanks in advance.

If the engine is running ok, then massively unlikely to be that!!
I would do a complete service on it, firstly, then take it for a CO check, thsi will give a VERY big clue as to what is wrong.
The most likely thing is a duff sensor like the lambda.
Put up what the readings were.

As above. Really unlikely to be the engine in fact 90% sure it probably isn't as you'd definitely know if that was going to give up and it would be chucking out blue/black smoke and stinking of fuel as well.

Most likely to be failed lambda sensor or possibly knackered cat but definitely not something like a duff engine!

Default Audi A3 problems

Thanks for the comments people, below is a list of what was on the failure sheet;

Its all on the refusal certificate I have no graphs or anything they haven’t given me them

Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content after 2nd fast idle excessive (7.3.2b)

Exhaust emissions hydrocarbon content after 2nd fast idle excessive

Exhaust emissions lambda reading after 2nd fast idle outside specified limits

Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content at idle excessive

So they basically told me head gasket had gone but then it changed to the engine block had cracked etc

Any help would be greatly appricated

Thanks again

lambda or the Air Flow Meter - or both.

very doubtful it's the engine itself.

also check the CAT see if thats ok - if it's collapsed that will cause an emissions failure

see if your mate can get it to another garage for a second opinion, get them to stick the probe up it and see if its getting similar readings.

I would also suggest the lambda sensor is buggered!

Hi people

Lambda Sensor failed and it was given a good service and wne tstraight through emmisions - you guys are great and saved my mate loads of money, many many thanks to everyone who helped.

Mates has asked one last request he says the service light is on still it says "Inspect" next to mileometer and has asked if anyone knew how to fix this so it didn't show??
