Hi Dennis
After putting the engine in and starting up, the car runs great (other than obvios overfueling) It Sounds excellent and is quiet and smooth.
However im sure you realise by now that due to youre bosses actions i will not be coming back to youreselves for any more Help.
I do need information on my £9000 engine build from you though. Obviosly by now you must realise that the two bd14s are not the correct cams for the power i am hoping to achieve. Also after a Very apprehensive few words with Mark he is telling me (i Hope in anger) that the compression ratio is 8:1.
Im hoping you know (also for the sake of youre engine) that 8:1 is absoloubtly no good for a 500+Bhp Engine.
Im constantly telling myself that you would not have built this engine with a 8:1 Compression ratio as this is going to cause me a lot of extra money getting the compression lowered.
Martin At Reyland is now going to deal with this build but im hoping that you have lowered the compression as you need to on this sort of engine and i will take the fact of you wanting two bd14s as maybe a difference of opinion.
Dont really want to fall out over this but as im sure you can imagine 8:1 is wildly wrong.
Torque developments have already ruined there reputation. Im hoping you are not going to ruin youres.
Thanks mate
Look forward to youre (and others) responses On this (massive) Problem.

Mate i knew you was right about cams from the first instant. The problem was i didnt have a choice in the matter as they were already bought and paid for.
Surely dennis would not have built a 500+bhp motor on 8:1 compression would he?
If he has then im Fooked with already a nasty hole blown in my wallet. And the holes gonna get a lot bigger before i get to 500hp.
I mean 8:1........................................
Jesus i hope not.....

No i wasnt told comp ratio. I was told i would have an engine strong enough for upto 60,000 miles and capable of over 500hp.
What i got by the looks of things was £9000 poorer and an engine thats gonna last 2 mins at 500 hp.
I knew the cams were wrong but thats £100 to sort.
But to lower the comp we are into £1000s

I did Call him and the owner of the company has just muttered 8:1 Comp ratio. I hope because he does not no and he know im not going back.
Im hoping that as the builder of my engine (and cosworth Specialist) that Dennis is going to tell me that the owner (mark) Told me that it was 8:1 because he didnt know what he was talking about.
The build was donw to dennis not the owner of the company.
Dont get me wrong im not having a go at him. And dont want to. But if he comes here and says that he built an engine cpapable of 500-550hp with a compression ration of 8:1.
Then its going to be hard not to.
And the fact is my engine is basically the same as his and he has the same aspiration as me (nearly) so im sort of helping him out before he blows his engine to smithereens.

Shit to hear you not happy mate
Not the 1st time ive heard similar bad stories (ie someone I knows 7k bill from the for what wouldve been a 350quid bill if they actually had a clue what the fuck they was doing rather than just change everything for stuff they did understand without asking...).

who is the cosworth specialist? TDI? never heard of them?
cant understand why people spending huge amounts like £9k dont go to one of the top very well know, tried and tested tuners!!

I doubt it, as I thought that Mark had pistons designed to his spec that achieve that with some unique squish etc? Along with being a lot stronger than normal pistons? I'm sure Mark will clarify that his 8:1 engines aren't like a standard build anyway

Euan is youre car 8:1 Then?
Why will the autronic make it work on 8:1. Ive spoke to two different extremely well respected tuners today, and both have said 8:1 is just about the worst Comp And the that two BD14s are just about the worst combination of cams possible. (backing up what i already thought)

Im sure in Dennis's resto posts he says he is using high comp(in the 8's) and gives reasons for it. As Euan says MAD also run comp ratios around that without problems on big power engines.

I'm surprised that Dennis or anyone at TDI would have recommended these for a 500 engine.
Jap tuner I think (If I'm thinking of the same company they used to be based in a petrol station off the north circ way back).
When I first read ebony's resto post, was surprised TDI was used. I'd of never picked them to build my engine

i suppose its down to seeing what your "mates" have and going the same route. shame though. if i was spending £9k on a shitty old ford i'd want BIG results!!
My engine is not 8:1, neither do I run two bd 14s.
I understand what Mike says about Mark and the fact that his engines may well be specially designed to run such a high comp for the power.
Now you realise why the tops cossie tuners are where they are...

Mate it was not drive in drive out.... I wish.
For that price i had to take the engine out. Strip some of it. And then put it back in.
Im not worried about changing the cams whatsoever. as is say its only a couple of hundred quid.
My concern is the Comp Ratio. one paticular tuner Very well known. Said he would not even want to touch the engine with that comp ratio.

if i had my chance again i would go with one of the great tuners. but in all honesty i was blinded by the workshop and caliber of cars they have down at TDI.
Problem is i now have to pick up the pieces. The exhaust cam will be changed this saturday (hopefully). But its what choice i make on the comp ration thats the problem.
No point in running the car in if its gotta come back apart again is there.

Thats the thing they are a big money Jap tuner. Its been talked about a lot on here how things like evos and other jap cars respond to totaly different tunning methods to cosworths.

yes i Agree Neil. Its definately a tough lesson for me (well my wallet). And they are a jap tuner but dennis is not. He is supposed to knwo what he is doing so im hoping he will get on the thread when he gets the chance and let me know that 8:1 is fine or that it isnt 8:1.
Thing is Joe Knows his stuff and so does Ahmed/mark. And they are saying its no good at 8:1.

It is....................But i would have made sure the engine is the spec I wanted in the 1st place
Just as option I heard about somewhere, trying to help the dude out with another avenue to explore as it sounds like its bottom end rebuild time machining the pistions at best otherwise

The spec i asked for was 500-550 hp for what they told me 60,000 miles.
Thats all i asked. No comp ratio no cam choice Just 500-550hp......
Call it
Unknowledgeable Figure chasing.....

any chance we can have a breakdown (no pun intended) of how the bill was 9k, I find that a scary amount considering what you did before hand (removal/stripping it etc.)
sorry to hear your about your problems hope you get sorted asap.
