Default Insurance companies, SHOCKING

Right my brother has passed his test today, and he bought my escort gti off me as his first car.

Ive had a few quotes for him but one of his mates works for swinton, and told him that because he is a chef they class them as a lot more likely to drink and drive, therefore making his insurance considerably higher. He said if possible to not put occupation as a chef and as something else within his industry ie baker, cook etc, which isnt technically totally lying.

So ive just done him another quote as a Baker instead of Chef and its came back £500 cheaper, making it £1100!

Its no wonder insurance companies make so much! The best thing is his flat is 20mtrs from his restaurant so its not as if hes ever gonna drive :lol

Now my question is how do they know what your occupation is anyway? theres no proof asked of what your job is, so surely you can say what you want as you dont need to prove it if you have an accident or claim etc?

Try insuring it just for Domestic, Social & Pleasure and not for to and fro from work.

I said this to Lee seeing as he aint ever gonna use it to drive over the road, but if he moves then he would need to change it? Might give it a go see if it goes down a bit, but tbh i dont think £1100 for an escort gti when youve just passed is a bad price? hes 24 mind

I totally agree with that statement. You should only get penalised for what you have done and not what you could do.

Mine seems to be good, it should help considering you're a professional driver, and passed a proper driving test.
Play around on Elephant to check is best answer.

What pisses me off is factors they don't consider.
I drive to work at 3:30am, so nothing to hit, no rush hour etc, and work is secure parking with security guard, none of this matters!
Also as an advanced driver discount equated to 1%

They use information from past claims to assess the likelyhood of a particular occupation being involved in an accident, and the same with types of car and with where you live.

There must have been above average claims resulting from incidents with cars driven by chefs. The fact they are likely to be driving home at night when all the idiots are out doesn't help, even if the chef hasn't been drinking. Bakers are more likely to be driving to work at 4.00 in the morning, all the idiots are locked up by then or are in A&E.

I'm an electrical engineer but I live in the wrong postcode area.

we got an escort gti a couple of years ago as a run around, when the renewals came round they wanted £1000 to insure a 350bhp 3 door & £900 to insure a standard gti

what I love about insurance companies is, Renewal time!!

just let your policy run thru to the next year just like they want you to... then realise for some reason, you are paying MORE this year than you did last!! maybe only £20 or £30, but why?

because if you phone them up as a 'new customer' you get a quote about £100 cheaper then you are paying!!' scandalous how they can just chop and change prices just as they feel... robbing coonts!

Best yet, my mate was with Direct line for 9 years!!! just let it run on and on.

After 9 years he had a little bump, fender bender. Then finds out that over the years they have stripped his policy to the basics as you now have to opt for the extra's.

Yet have been charging him a little more each year!!
