Default Career change ????

Right looking into a career change as i hate my job especailly the permanent nights i have to work

So looking into plumbing or electrician as both seem to be fairly secure and demand seems high and only getting worse by the looks of it.

Have no experinece of either apart from bit of diy around the house but can turn my hand to most things fairly quickly and more often than not am quite competent in them to.

Like the idea of doing something different every day as in not the mundane production line jobs i'm used to.

Had a look at a few courses etc etc.

So for BOTH fields wot qualification's are needed to be competent and m,ake a career out of them. ??

All mention city + guilds various levels etc but which level would experienced ppl say is needed.

Potential earnings ??

Is private sector or commercial better ??

Will probably have more questions but ANY help apprecaited

Hello Fella

I would say you need at least 5 years "On the job" experiance with a good all round plumber...ie someone who attends call outs to see a wide range of different works.... to be good enough to call yourself a plumber....

As for these 6 week courses.......BOLLOCKS

It cant...simple.

You may be able to fit your mates outside tap in 6 weeks training.....thats it.

Would you let little billy down the road map your 500 bhp Cossie with 6 weeks mapping course under his belt

Here is another VERY easy but in demand trade to get into.......TILING

LOADS of work out there and easy to pick up.....

im an electrician. well more of an electrical engineer tbh.
i done a 4 year apprenticeship, which im guessing aint really an option for u.
im more comercial based doing mainly building maintenance.
qualifications ive got are
16th edition (soon to be 17th)
nvq level 3
hnc level 3

along with other bits and bobs.

BUT i work with people who used to be welders, painters, cleaners etc
they just get sent on a course (1 day at college a week for a couple of years) and then call them electricians.

try phoning a few agencies and see if they have anything where you could get some training.

electricians that do domestic stuff is probably slightly different but i dont know to much about it tbh.
they brought in news rules a few years ago i think. you'll have to ask someone who does it about doing houses if thats what u fancy trying.

Tiling was another option tiff and full on complete bathroom fitting as i like getting my hands dirty so to speak and fancy the full on approach with bit of job satisfaction at the end of it.

Presuming bathroom plumbing and electrics to be fairly basic though compared to rest

If you fancy getting into the whiole lot mate.....there is alot of work out there and you see a nice finish....PLUS alot of money, which is nice.

Sometimes i wish i could do all of it instead of getting in the different trades and eating into my profit........

DEFFO a good move trying that one

Might be worth looking into that avenue then and suppose kitchen fitting very similar to.

There was a guy on here that trained someone i'm sure ( K5SSY or something similar) Maybe worth taping him up

i fitted my own kitchen too and that was no harder. and i moved the sink to a new place so had to do the pipe work for that.

the right tools and a bit of common sense and i think u can pick most things up.
i domt mean that u can master them, just because i moved a sink and put a shower in dont mean i'd offer to fit my mates boiler.

good luck with what ever u choose mate.

but if u get an offer for a building maintenance job then think about it if u fancy winding down. a real easy job and most of them pretty well paid.

im leaving mine because im bored of it as it so easy, but i like to be challenged and learn new stuff, and im only 22 and working with a load of 50 real olds who was made redundant and things.
