Hi I have a DELL inspiron 1300 laptop with 1.5ghz (celeron i think) processor and 250mb RAM (shared graphics memory). TBH its pretty pants, but does what i need of it
I'm looking to upgrade the RAM to maybe 1gb and maybe a faster processor. Can some one please tel me what type of RAM i need and how many sticks (can it be used singular or in pairs) and also what exact processor type i need.
Also a place to buy them from over the internet would be very handy
Thanks for any help
Bri.

well the ram question first
i really not know for sure but:
i dont think you could have more then 2 sticks and only 2gb at max
the ram you use is SO-DIM
you could decide yourself if you want 1xgb or 2x512mb
(i dont know what you have from before)
the processor you can not upgrade

the processor you can not upgrade
why can the processor not be upgraded. Do Dell not use a standard motherboard in their ranges. If your motherboard has not got the biggest processor avaliable for it then can you not purchase the biggest processor that'll work with your motherboard ?
Any ideas what the motherboard details are ? Its worth having a look.
I upgraded my Compaq from a 2.8ghz celeron to a 2.8ghz P4, I have the option to go upto a 3.06ghz P4 but couldn't find one at the time. Only reason I found this out was the fact the Laptop manual stated the processors that would fit in my motherboard.

Andy how on earth do you go about swapping a laptop processor? sounds alot more tricky then a pc, someone also said on another post last week that laptop processors are welded in kinda thing so you cant change them
maybe thats just some shitty laptops that cant be upgraded?

Most of the laptops available have the processer built onto the motherboard in order to aid cooling and keep the size down. Whilst it is possible to change these processers it is not easy and does require some soldering skills, read a lot of skill, time and patience.
With the availability of laptop processors being so low and the prices high it is nearly always easier and cheaper to buy a new laptop.

Well I must be lucky then. The Compaq Manual that came with my Laptop was a generic manual for a few other higher specs and a few HP models (compaq and HP are the same) It gave me step by step instruction on how to remove the casing, which screws to lossen and in which order to remove the heatsink and finally the processor ! Took me about 15 minutes and 5 of those were looking for my thermal paste !
I think a few years ago they were soldered etc but with the processors in there now aday they are more interchangeable. As I said in a previous post. Its always worth having a look at the laptop manual, you never know your luck !

after diggin a little more it would appear you can actuall upgrade the laptop ! so
to all the 'ooooh no you cants'
Good News is you have a Celeron M processor in so is simple enough to take out. Bad news is the only upgrade you can goto it a 1.6Ghz so really is not worth the time, cost or hassle !
