This weekend I bought a bumper but as so many of them the mounting brackets (the brackets riveted to the inside of the bumper) aren't what they're supposed to be. On one side the bracket is broken and the physical mounting lug is missing. On the other side the mounting lug is still there and the bracket has a small crack in it. So this morning I went to see if the brackets can be bought new. For a moment I thought:"Yey, they are replaceble." but it turned out the brackets are no longer in service
What's the best solution to get the bumper fitted properly. Former owner had it tie-wrapped to his car but I really don't want that for obvious reasons.
The bumper is very tidy, no cracks or big scratches on it so buying another one is not really an option. It's even the correct colour
Does someone has found a good way getting the mounting lugs mounted to the bracket without breaking of again? I've heart of many ppl trying it and failing. They seem to break of every time you try to fix it.
My idea was try to find a knackered bumper where the brackets and lugs are still in one piece but how big is the chance finding something like that? Slim to none

my side mount have also broken. you can get new ones through the cosworthshop on ebay but they aint cheap, so when i replace mine im going to use a piece of ali/steel sheet cut to the same shape as the plastic, weld on a nut so that it can be bolted on through the wing bracket, once the brackets made up it can be rivited to the bumper like the old one

Iirc frog off here did a mod on his without new brackets.

 

They are listed by Ford as a "fixing kit" of 2 brackets. Finis 1129131. I will see if it is still avail. if people want, and a price to match...

I know Ian. In Holland I can't get this "fixing kit" It's been taken out of service here.
Making them up out of metal is a good idea though. Never thought of that Easy enough to duplicate the plastic ones out of 1,5/2mm metal or alu sheet I guess. I'll discuss it with my m8. Tbh, I think it's even preferable over the fragile plastic ones. Maybe we can make a couple so I can offer them to someone else who'd need them.

luckily i found a scrap bumper for sale with new brackets on so managed to do a deal with the brackets lol

my old ones havnt snapped, but 1 is carcked round the nut and the other the nut is fibreglassed back in

someone needs to make some metal ones of these i think, only problem is the locating lug that the nus sits in is angled so this could be a pain to get correct

 

Right, I've discussed it with my m8 and he sees no reason we can't make them. Tonight we're having a look on how to angle the mountinglugs but he said it won't be a problem. We are starting on the prototype somewhere next week I hope.
We will be making them out an alumunium plate.
I think we can make them including the mounting lugs fitted to the brackets for about 45 Pounds per set. As I'm in The Netherlands some postage would have to be added.

the only concern I still have with is that in case of something hitting the bumper the bracket won't break but the bumper instead because that's the weakest point. But we might have found a solution for that as well. We could use a softer, easier breaking bolt so that the mounting bolt will break instead of the bumper and bracket.

Would anyone be interested?
If there is a lot of interest maybe it would be smart if I send them to a central place so the brackets could be distrributed from there. I think that would save a lot on postage and packaging costs.

I hope to have the prototypes in 1 maybe 2 weeks. As soon as those are finished it's easy enough to make 20 more sets. Yesterday I took off the brackets from my own bumper and my m8 had a look at it. He said it won't be a problem. I'll keep you all updated.

Hello

What I did (with Moose130's help) is weld a plate on the bottom of the wing to re-create the triangle in which the bumper holder sits. I still had to get replacement brackets from ford where they were broken.

One of the problems, along with broken brackets, is that the wing rusts, and the bumper bracket holder no longer sits properly, so the bumper sags and isn't held properly.

I know exactly what you mean. Thank god the triangular shape hasn't rusted away on my wings. It was a bit mullered but I managed to get the shape back so the clip is properly secured in the wing.

 

I had a the front bumper drop off one night and had to improvise.

I've used a suspension drop link cut in half then bolted to the orig plastic bracket then put a bolt through the rubber whci still gives a little movement.

It recently survived a front end crunch so I can get some pics if anyone i interested.

I'm having trouble with mine and I cannot seem to get the bumper off. Am I correct in thinking that there are fixings at the bumper 'ends' i.e behind the wheel arch liner and also a further two intermediate ones-torx headed bolts as below?

 

AFAIK there's only a bolt behind the arch liner on both sides.
Never seen torx bolt fixings on the front bumper.

 

On a saph front bumper you will only need to undo/remove the side fixings as in your 2nd picture. The first pic is (i think) the bolts for adjusting the height of the bumper on the 2 brackets that slide into the body.

Thanks for that. The side bolts,however, are spinning so I'll have to cut them off to remove them.

If i remember correctly (been ages since i stripped mine down for a rebuild ) The side bolts/mountings dont unscrew. They are triangular shaped so you only need to turn it enough to pull the bumper off it.
I guess if they have corroded they may need removing/cutting off to get bumper off.

Right, the plastic bit that goes into the wing is like a triangle that you twist into the wing so it stays in place.

There's a through hole in the middle of it, no thread or anything.

Inside the bumper is a T piece which has something like a rubber bung which slides into the plastic holder which is on the wing.

The rubber bung has a hole and thread inside it, so that you can run a bolt from the inside of the engine compartment/wing, through the wing holder into the bumper.

If the bolt is freewheeling, that's because the metal thread attached to the bumper has rust-welded itself to the bolt, or, the plastic around it has broken so there's nothing to hold it.

Do you know Maldon in essex i had to go into the police station to show my doc's ect and packed out the front and when i was reversing out i turned early and cought the buper on the curb to hear my bumper dragging the floor it was totaly off
I made sure it was fitted alot better after that day

 

Same happened to me on the way back from essex meet after dropping someone off on the way.
Luckily I was reversing... Imagine that happening going forwards at xx mph on the motorway

Sharp metal edges and plastic don't mix
