I nicely installed all my pipework before dropping the bath in. At the time, it was watertight up to the closed valves. I added the copper tails and tightened the compression fittings as much as I thought they needed.

We put the bath in place which in itself was enough stress for one complete lifetime (due to it being a £700 bath and a £700 piece of glass around it with only about 1/2" to spare all round)

I then put the pushfit connectors on and got everything else connected. However, both top compression nuts/olives are leaking. I have progressively tightened them more and more, although it is restricted space, so its a challenge. I now feel that they are very tight, but still leaking very slightly. So slight that I did wonder for a while if it was condensation. You can see from the pics that the tops of the top nuts are very slightly wet.







I am about to remove everything upwards of the valves to re-do it with new copper and olives etc. Any tips?!!? Should I be using any kind of compound or anything to make things more reliable? How tight should these compression fittings really need to be?

ptfe and Fernox LSX leak sealer never lets us down

 

don't do the nuts up so tight next time,
the olives seal easy with little compression,
to much will distort them,
no need to use sealing compound
and is it mainly the pipe on the right?
as looks as tho the radius is going into
the fitting and the pipe may still be out of
round from the formed bend

 

it will be brass olives they can be a bugger to tighten in a tight space take them out wrap a spot off ptfe on them bout 5 wraps put back in and tighten failing that cut the olivs off and get softer copper olives, that will do the trick! also make sure there is no bend atall where u are compressing the olive on to it has to be perfectly straight

 

if he's tightened them up far too much then the pipe might be crushed aswell witch will be a ball ache for him

 

can u use that on potable water?

 

I can cut new pipes, not the end of the world. Well, getting at any of it is a pain in the scrundies, but there you go.

This fucking bath is fighting me ALL the fucking way. Good job it looks the bollocks, thats the only thing thats keep me going. Well, the missus' sexual advances to cheer me up certainly help keep me sane!!

 

yep. your supposed to leave it for about 1 hour before putting pressure in the pipe. its not like a paste or owt, it sets like a silacone

 

if he had over tightened them u would see the olive comming out of the fitting. just remember on compresion fittings its a turn and a quarter

use some boss white on the olives m8, never try and tighten compression joint without any compound.

I wouldun't bother using them pushfit hoses, just do it all the way in copper, safe + sucure then!

 

rigwrecker not all the time i've seen em where they are leaking then i've undone them n the olives lower than the pipe god knows how the do it!

i usually level the bath leggs before i set the bath in place then its just a few minor adjustments when you get it in place Christian and Beccy

It was fitted for a couple of years before removing it for the revised design and what was supposed to be better pipework. Its much simpler now, but I have spent 2 evenings trying to get rid of this miniscule leak now.

Could be the bends as said christian, the bender alters the pipe circumference past the bend and your bends are close to the fitting as it is....

Any reason for the bends anyways? After all, flexi pipes are to save fooking about bending etc anyway

Yes, the pipes have to cross over (as can be seen in the pic). Kinda hard to explain, would have been an absolute nightmare to do in copper and putting the bends on as I have made the pipe runs the nicest they could be. The flexi's are huge great things and only 300mm long, so not the most flexible flexi's I have ever seen.

yep a must admit a level bathroom is rare the worst one was a do it yourself twit that done the floor in a wet room it was 6ft by 9ft and it had 3" of run

 

looking at that first pic again, it may be worth trying to renew the pipe with the leaking joint and making it a bit longer before the bend. As the bend is quite close to the IV.

I wanted large bore Flexi's and finding them with 3/4 tap fitting one end and a decent quality push-fit the other was a nightmare. Couldn't get these particular ones any longer.

Actually, I think if you weigh up how much I have achieved without expert help, the problems that I have had are far outweighed by the success.

Now i have seen the pics, i would sway towards re-piping it fella......Just keep the formed bend away from the compresion fitting

 

Thats acheivement though not luck. Youre unlucky getting a leak as the work looks a very neat install
