Think it was the T1-R Matt - IIRC Dingy and Stu (MSD ) disliked them for the sidewall squidginess and sloppy response but I'm sure they can expand ( couldn't find thread sorry )

I have T1R all round on me "911 turbo"(aka mk3 astra), they are a big improvement over the T1S, a lot harder sidewall, but mine seem to be wearing prematurely on the outer edge, which was the difference the R was supposed to have according to toyo, harder rubber here to stop it, it seems worse.
I slide the car all the time but never the slightest hint of any sudden breakaway, they are the most predictable tyres I have ever used.

They might have been early production issues or a bad batch of tyres - I don't know but it is telling that the T1-S and T1-R rarely seem to get tested in major tests for one "reason" or another

There's a good thread on MLR about T1Rs, well worth a read.

I hate the T1Rs that are on my track wheels and will be replacing them soon, they've only covered about 500 miles, incl 300 - 400 road miles and that's enough for me to know they're utterly crap....

Good pointer Lynne - I'm sure that was generally the gist of the thread on here about them some while back ( the thread Matt and I couldn't find.... )

Falken 452s get quite a good review and are cheap. A mate has put them on his FQ400 and he rates them.

The problem was with the T1-S was the shoulder of the tyre was breaking away from the tyre itself, thus casuing the unpredictable handling etc.

Toyo re-released the tyre as the T1-R and subsquently put two symetrical bands around the egdes of the tyre to stop the same thing happening, and solving the problem

I had a very early set of Toyo T1-S's and they were spot on, excellent grip in the dry and wet and the shoulders were fine, I think the problme must have been with later tyres.

IIRC the first T1-S's came standard on the Evo 6!?

AFAIK Evos came with Yoko A046s or A048s. My VIII had Yoko A046s

I also had a very early set of the T1-S and they were grippy as fuck in the dry and probably the best tyres i have had gave me plenty of confidence in them as you knew exactly what was happening with your grip levels for some reason lol just in the wet they turned useless on me

Got a newer T1-R set on another car and they were a complete step backwards

no no no... evo 6 came NEW as std with Bridgestone S01's and these had good sidewalls, i then went to S02's wich were even better, then they stopped making them, i tried S03's and was dissapointed compared to the S02, they were more like the S01...

i HATED the GSD3 eagle F1's awful, but eh Toyo T1-S were as good as the SO3's but wore down quicker.

All T1S tyres that I had on my Cossie 5 years back (went through a couple of sets) were brilliant.

Lynne - bit surprised to hear you run what are basically average road tyres (T1-R) on your track wheels? As track tyres go they are frankly rubbish.

Same also goes for Falken 452s - ABSOLUTELY NOT suitable for track use.

Mine after Croft - note the missing lumps of tread (brand new tyres 2 days before, now removed and binned after 220 miles track use ):

If you're as commited as you'd need to be to have "track wheels", you really should have track tyres - such as Toyo R888, Dunlop Direza D01J (sp), Yoko A048R etc.

Normal road tyres, as good as they may be, aren't good on track.

Back on topic though - if you have a genuine issue (not leaping on the bandwagon) with your Toyos, take them back to the supplier, who will return them to Toyo, who in turn (if they see fit) send it on to an independent test facilty to check them.

I certainly loved my T1S, T1Rs are supposed to superceed them so should be better still. My T1S I class in the same bracket as Goodyear F1s, Bridgestone's RE0 range, and on the road Falken 452s. Good CHEAP road tyres. Of course there are better ROAD tyres, and if you're doing enough track days or want the best performance, PLENTY of proper TRACK tyres.

I personally use Toyo R888s as they are cheap for the superior level of perfomance they offer, road and track year round. They only need a bit of common sense in proper monsoon conditions. But then who races like an arse when there are rivers on the road?

Then there's the Slicks option which is a whole other ball game!

Never had a problem with my Toyo T1's or T1-r's that i now have on the Saph. They are a pretty good road tyre compared to some of the others i have tired.

Agree with Si about them being unless for track tyres unless its wet and then there alright as wont get to hot. I ran a set of T1's on my Integra as just wanted a set of winter tyres, i ended up using them on a Dry trackday Totally ripped the outside edges of tread on and melted and deformed the centres even worse than is shown in Si's picture.

Nice punning action Nash

I found the F1s I had on my Sierra seemed to overheat really easily in the dry on the road and I don't think I am a hard driver. Cheered me up somewhat when tyre tests started to report that although the best tyre in the wet usually, they were often the poorest in the dry out the top brands.
The best I ever found for dry road use in 15" was the B/Stone S-02 and the Yoko AVS sport - perhaps they suited my suspension set-up/driving style etc. With the Yokos discontinued in my size I've got the R888s and they are superb for my usage.

I wonder if Toyo will manage to get a set of T1Rs tested by Autocar next week in their tyre test ( they usually get excluded for one reason or another )?

I know they're rubbish Si.

The tyres came new with the 2nd hand FQ400 wheels I bought, so I swapped tyres over, put my F1s on the FQ400 wheels for road use and shoved the crappy Toyos on the Enkei wheels for track. For the amount of trackdays I will be doing, it doesn't warrant spending money out on 888s or equivalent track tyres or slicks.

If the situation changes and I'll be doing a lot of trackdays, I will get tyres that are decent on track or borrow a set off slicks off Andy.

Sounds like a good plan if your track use increases then! Didn't realise the T1s weren't your own personal choice (came with the wheels), hence me being surprised you had labelled them as your track set up - as I would have expected you to have chosen more suitable rubber.

As you said though, that's what it came with, so get them worn out asap and get some sticky stuff on there
