I'm just getting back into the Ford thing after years of Alfas, so please stay with me!
I've bought a MK1 Transit Camper and want to go Turbo Diesel with it. The Transit forum guys are all using the 2.5Di engine, but that needs the in yer face bullnose front end and mine's only a pop-top van bodied version, not a big coachbuilt job.
There's not much length in the engine bay of a MK1, but if the 1.8 diesel fits in the space left by a CVH which is itself about the same length as a Crossflow (?), then I reckon I may be OK...
I'm thinking 1.8TD as found in 90s Escorts, Fiestas etc. Can anybody point me in the right direction to find out about fitting these longitudinally? Will they bolt to a type9 box or MT75? Any help would be much appreciated.

 

Most fords use the same bolt pattern for the boxes.

Cheers Tabetha, it looks like late Sierras might have used this engine too - perfect if I can find one with its matching box.

I just don't know where to look for info, having to wade through all sorts of sh*** to find anything of interest!

 

You are going to struggle with the MT75 box, but if you can use a Transit type 9 and the Sierra bell housing then that could work. Either way you are going to struggle for room without using the bull nose front.

The trouble with using the escort or fiesta engine is it will of course be front wheel drive.

I really want to try to avoid the bull-nose front if I can and from a brief look at the scrappy I reckon the small diesel is close to the crossflow sort of length.
I'm just hoping that somebody here can point me towards more info. Kit cars use the Zetec mounted front/back rather than side to side so I'm investigating what box they go for.
I'm pretty sure one of the Lotus 7 replica manufacturers built a diesel version using the small ford engine too. Still trying to find out about that one...
So do MT75 boxes and the other rwd 5 speeds have different mountings or would the input shaft be the main problem?

 

why not use the 1.8 diesel turbo found in a sierra???

 

Sierra diesel would certainly be easiest, but they're already a bit thin on the ground in the West of Scotland - can only think of a couple of Sierras in scrappies near me and they're both petrol

 

ok how about the engine gearbox combo found in the ldv's... they're ford.....

 

Yup LDVs do use Ford engines, but it's the 2.5Di in the larger ones, I will have a look at the smaller vans in case though - good call sir!

Yep 2.4 Duratorq, to big for flat front Mk1.

 

My dad had a(old) P reg, in 76/77 is that a mk 1 ?
If so it had the extended nose to start with until a woman backed her allegro into the front so was repaired by her sons firm, that did camper vans and came back with a flat front.
It had a 1700cc V4 engine though, that's all I can remember as I was 8/9 at time, loved it though nice van.

I wonder does anyone know if its possible to fit a 2.4 duratorque engine and gearbox into a ford transit mk1 bullnose, there was a v6 fitted but has been removed and wonder was it possible to convert it to this new type engine and gearbox, if so what parts would i need, the engine box came out of a 2004 ldv convoy and if i need the ldv parts to go with the engine then whatb would i need as i did not recall seeing an cable to operate the injector pump, any ideas would be helpful, thanks
