Default The smoking Fiesta! - FIXED i think!

Hello, had a great day at Ford Fair today.

Did anyone manage to see my Fiesta on track? seemed to be smoking a shit load of oil, but the engine ran fine. I think it's possibly something to do with the breathers not being upto the job.

Seemed to hold off a few quicker cars, I think!

The blue smoke was a bit of a nightmare though. Not sure how to sort the breather though. Popped and banged like fuck.

Was good seeing the AG focus and Porkies 3dr battle it out.

1st things 1st, just put all the breathers into an oil catch tank, can see if its deffo that then too.

prob wise running 1way valves in each so can only breath OUT too, S13s for example smoke like fuck when not got 1ways fitted an can breath in too.

How it goes >

Rocker cover pipe goes into a t-peice.

One end of the T is in the block, and the other end of the T has a pipe attached to it and just goes to the atmosphere as it was...

Does this sound like what it could be? Would it cause the engine to smoke?

Fantastic, it fucking shifts.

Need new pads though, and some proper fluid as they started to fade.

Other than that it was great, the noise was awesome and it popped and banged

deffo sling a 1way valve in it before the atmo breathing bit mate, facing outwards.

on S13s, if you dont run one, they do a fantastic impression of a totally fucked and mega smoking engine, but are fine with one.

may be the same prob with you (as as standard it will always have the inlet sucking on it, so contant vacumn, so need for a 1way), so it DEFFO worth a try mate!

most brake master cyl air pipes have 1 in em, find a big one from them maybe?

ive got 2 really flashy big aeroquip style flapper valves that are 60quid each, cant even remember why i have em, but thats what i use, but at that price, im keeping em

And you flower

Gonna run two pipes into catch tanks (lucosade bottle ) Tomorrow to see what the score is. If it changes anything etc!

If not, I'm gonna buy a one way valve, and see if that helps.

Would I slam a chubby rotter?

Yes.

ANYWAY -

Sorted it.

Running one pipe from rocker cover, and one from block. No more smoke, only when it pops a flame at high revs!

Seems to be using quite a bit of oil though, so could be wise to invest in a swirl pot?

Right, it seems to be only doing it :

a) When I'm high up the revs and I let off.
b) When I power back on high up the revs.
c) When it's warm.

Could it be the oil getting too thin and burning off? Would an Oil Cooler and a oil catch/seperator tank do the job? As it's using oil as well now.

Dunno really Dave! mid to high 15s I'd hope!

Anymore ideas on this?

If the oil gets too hot, it's going to burn right? Is there a possibility the oil is getting too hot causing it to smoke like a bitch?

5W30 is about as thin as you can get mate, DEFFO give something ago thats 40 at least, esp as you using it on track.

when you saying 1 pipe from rocker cover, 1 from block, running them to where?

you tried the 1way valves yet too?

No, not yet Stav.

Err, the pipes are running.......

to the wishbone.

Temp. messure, would a oil seperator help? It seems to be using quite a bit of oil.

Id not worry about the oil seperator as yet, 1st things 1st. Many cars dont run one at all, just a catch tank, or just a pipe to the floor, no point getting complex and expensive for nowt.

And oil temps may well be an issue as you using piss thin oil but could well be perfectly fine on a decent thickness oil.
40 oil rather than 30, and 1way valves, THEN see what happens.

Like said, the valves alone cure it on many cars.

Hell, some cars wont even run at all if the crankcase can breath in, CVHs etc do that.

I'm just a little worried as to why it's using so much oil at the moment tbh.

I'll have to find one of these valves, Where do I run the valve from?

The engine has a rocker cover breather and a block breather.

Run 1 valve in each pipe mate, so it can breath out, but not in.
And just leave it venting to the floor as usual.
Put the valves anywhere in the pipe run, makes no odds really.

Like said, ive seen cars throw CLOUDS of smoke because purely the 1way valve issue.

And also ive seen cars smoke like a bitch as they was running 30thickness oil, which is stupidly thin
If oils hot, it gets thinner, and 30 oil will easy get so thin it can get past seals and smoke like a cunt.

Easy thing to do if you want to see if its burning all the oil or blowing it out the breathers is vewnt the breathers into an old water bottle or coke can, thats what id do.

But personally id bank, esp as you can see it, that 99% of it is blowing past the rings or valve stems as the oil is too thin, 30, and the crankcase can currently breath in as there nothing stopping it, which makes the same blowby situation worse.

It's definatly throwing oil out the breather, as it's all over the top of the wishbone...

I thought Zetec's could only run on 5w30 oil, other wise they seize up?

When you say "bank" what do you mean?

id ask about the 30 thing mate, to be sure, from a real expert on tuned ones.
maybe start a new thread on here. ive certainly never known any engine to only be able to handle piss thin 30 oil!
sounds proper madness to me, 40 is more like it for a hard driven car.

and bank, id jus meant "id be sure"

and no prob about the help, your cars wicked, so i wanna help fix what im thinking is a fairly minor issue thats causing a whole shitload of smoke, lol.
ive had a lot of experience of hard tuned cars smoking like cunts, and how to stop it, so hopefully i can do some good, lol

Right found one Stav - fitted it, and it seems to have worked!

Only seems to smoke now at very high revs when you get back on the pedal (like a tiny blow of smoke)

It only does that with a bang though so I'm asuming it's just unburnt fuel.

No other smoke, doesn't seem to be using oil, and it's had a fucking good hammering to see what the score is

Thanks Mate

thanks everyone else for advice too
