Possibly an electrical problem.

When it cuts out and will not start can you hear the fuel pump?

Proably a poor conection somewhere.

With the engine running try moving the loom around and wiggling the wiring to sensors etc to try and locate the fault.

Could also be the hall sensor in the dizzy breaking down.

When u say it cuts out - how? At what rpm? What load? WHat happens exactly? What does the rev counter do? Does it splutter? Is it a dead cut?

I have changed the fuel pump relay, as for the cut out. it splutters and then cluts out its can be through any rev range.

once it has cut out it will sometimes start and sometimes it will. its very stange

3 wires in the dizzy must be a break in wires to the fuel pump?

Yes, but does it do it ON boost? And is a dead/clean cut - or splutter?

check and replace your battery earth wires if necessary
remove and clean/tighten where they fasten to the body/gearbox

bad earths are the most common electrical problems you can have , especially with the amounts of rust your cars have your side , i want to cry when i see it on your project cars......

Dizzy would be my favourite, i dont think theres an RS left that hasn't suffered with the sensor breakinf down (mine is on its way out).

Next time it happens watch the rev counter.........

And if it wont restart listen for the fuel pump when trying to restart, you'll probably find it will only prime and doesnt run when you crank the engine.

Had exactly the same problem on mine when i used to be sat in traffic it would just cut out , the loom by the fuse box that runs along the bulk head used to get hot and there was obviously a broken wire in there. wiggled it about and would start again. ended up havin to change the wiring loom got one for £40 with a clifford concept 500 on it!!!!!
