Default fitting t34 to a small turbo cossie

hi i have a small turbo cossy and there is lots of play in the turbo shaft and a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust. My car has been chipped, uprated fuel pump, fuel regulator, exhaust and filter everything you need for around 285-290bhp.

I wanted to do the 350bhp bolt on conversion that Stu @ M Developments is working on so i have already bought a t34 unfortunatly the conversion isnt ready yet. I dont want to pay to rubild my standard turbo as i will change it once this conversion becomes available.

So my question is can i bolt the t34 on and and set it up to run about 285-290bhp or is the turbo to powerful. Im thinking the fueling would be okay if im still running the same power.

cheers

No you can't swap turbos and be safe. The T34 will flow more air than your std turbo - it's airflow (matched with suitable fuelling etc.) that gives the power.

i was thinking if my small turbo is 1.2 bar then it might be possible to run the t34 at .8 or maybe lower so that the air flow would be similar

It will be reasonably safe at 14psi held if you dont push the revs up past 5000rpm mate. Ive tested it extensively on our own stage 1 calibration.

However... i CANNOT vouch that others calibrations will do the same.

Stu, would it overfuel at low revs since the small turbo produce boost lower down and as the t34 starts to build boost it would go towards a lean situation?

you are all forgetting the airflow meter, its not like changing a turbo on a shonky old L8 ecu car where its only reference is MAP.

Stu has given more specific info, with caveats - good for this particular guy.

I was answering in general, as I try to post with future readers in mind who may use the search facility and then think, wahay - I can bolt on a T3/04B on my small turbo, so I still stand by my answer

Future readers with ST cars will have an airflow meter too.

My point is the significant difference between doing with with a ST car and a BT car.

Bills advice was good and safe, and had the car been set to 18psi as per small turbo, it would have melted.

Point taken, but my point is DIY-ers - and imo, the post is now a different ball game with Stu's reply. It isn't a 'normal' situation, as the guy will be upgrading to Stu's EECIV development when ready, and wanted an interim solution.

So could he just bolt on a 'T34' and be safe - no, not without knowing specifics of his current chip and capping the boost - so the answer is still a general no, or 'ask your tuner'.

I agree, wasnt advising him to go and max it out down the M5, was just saying that I thought some of the people replying probably hadnt considered the airflow meter and the ecu's ability to compenstate to a certain extent for a difference in flow, where as an L8 etc has no chance.

thanks for the advice people i will fit the t34 and keep the boost low as im not looking for more power just want to stop the smoke because it looks bad when sat in traffic and im a bit worried incase the old turbo starts to break up and bits go into the engine.

hopefully Stu will not take to long sorting the conversion
