....is a 355mm ap disk a properly floating disk or semi?...The reason i ask is my reyland kit was listed as fully but after feeling my ducati fully floating disks i'd say semi.

Who gives a flying rats fucking ass! i wanna know about the CAR fitments!!

And its been sorted! The reason i asked for pics was because i have seen a pic where the bobbins were fitted differently (what i thought was incorrectly to what i did!).

So donned my sherlock holmes cap & found out you can fit the bobbins either way! (as long as they match!).....

Rich i'm fitting mine up tonight so i'll take some piccys for you!

just because one type floats more than another doesnt mean one is called semi floating, its just a difference in design

Making stuff up as usual? I have never described my brake kits as "fully floating" to anyone .....and having checked my site I can't find a mention there either.

I have never looked into other methods of disc mounting other than what I sell i.e. bolted or floating but having now looked at a couple of bike sites and their meaning of fully floating it would appear that Mike is correct in using the term fully floating as they have both axial & radial float !

You could get the 'loose disc' feel by increasing the axial float.

Not true!
Look at the pdf for std bobbins (yours), the others use different bells and/or bobbins!!

..so why is the std 916bp classed as semi floating where the disc hardly moves like my 355mm kit and 916sp fully floating which feels as if the disc will fall off?...Obviously the more float the better braking when hot...so really your kits are semi floating even though they float the same way but just not to the full meaning?

No, I reckon the AP's should be termed as fully floating! If you wanted more axial float (loose feel) you could simply use longer bobbins or skim a small amount off the disc in the bell mounting area.

Get some pictures of the discs on both bikes and lets see the difference! The bike guys seem to term semi floating as the riveted type and fully floating as a similar set up as the AP, that's my take on it anyway.... could be wrong as I'm not into bikes.

Phil,
You're clutching at straws, as the AP's are fully floating. If you look at they way they are mounted, they have full freedom of movement in both axis as Martin describes. The semi-floating ones you are talking about on the bikes do not (again as Martin describes).

Not 355 but here is a fitting guide for floaters

Lay disc face up

Install the float bushes (or bobbins as you call em )

Turn over and fit the screws (and if supplied domed washers - dome up)

Add loctite now (not prior to screwing in)

Torque to 11 - 14Nm

HTH

ok, daft question, but could you convert conventional "bolt up" type rotors/bells to floating just by swapping the bolts for "bobbins/bushes and the correct nuts/washers?"

Not without modifying your rotors, would be easier to simply buy floating discs to start with.

You need a diferent shaped hole in the disc

Gareth will tell you its technical name but we call it "oval"
