Default S2 Engine rattle????

Hi
Friend has a Series 2 that has developed a rattle
It sounds as though it is coming from the top end, the engine is fine on idle and while cruising but under load it rattles.

We have changed the cam and this has made no difference, also it doesn't seem to affect the performance in any way.

Does anyone have any idea's what to try next?

Cheers

if it only happens under load then are you sure it's an engine rattle and not pinking/detonation??

It is not det mate as it will do it when you pull off, it will do it if you rev the car up whilst stationary.

Just thought i would see if any one else has had a similar problem, think we may be pulling the engine apart now for the price of a gasket set is not that bad.

had same problem with mine, after driven on boost the top end wud make a knocking noise then eventually going away after 5-15 mins,

so i changed my standard head an cam for a stage 3 big valve head an piper cam an vernier pulley, an it still made the knocking noise after driven on boost, wen i got it on a rollin road the oil cap blew off,
so i changed my oil cap for another 1, drove my rs hard for about 30 mins an it didnt knock once!

so i wud change the oil cap as this was my problem an is pennies 2 change ova, not sayin it is ur problem but worth the try

Sorry but............how does an oil cap affect the internals of an engine and/or remedy knocking noises

If your oil cap is blowin off you have pressure in the crankcase and breather system.......

Talking about oil cap, when removed while engine is running it makes no difference but on my old escort it would stall if i did the same, does this mean anything????

All standard RS's will do that as it introduces an air leak to the system.

But to say changing you oil cap stopped your engine knocking.......well that just sounds like the dumbest thing ive ever heard??!

That would be like me saying my engine smoked until i stuck a nicorette patch on it?!!!!!

it may be the dumbest thing u eva heard mr safe chav but it stopped mine from rattlin/knockin wen driven hard as soon as i changed it, so if it wasnt the oil cap that was causin it, wat eva it was that was causin it must of fixed itself at the same time as i changed the cap ayyyyyyy

Duno mate

Ring a tuner and tell them what you told me.........if they dont laugh i will be well and truely amazed because there is no logical explanation for that.

As i said above, you cap shouldnt even blow off in the first place, so you have pressure build up on your crank case (which is bad), probably blow by from worn rings and bores!

The caps are a bit pants, they do need replacing every so often, but i just can't comprehend why changing a cap would cure a knocking noise?!!

Did the tuner comment on the health of your engine then?

he set my piper cam up an rr it, then said i needed new rocker cover/ cap an petrol cap, said he cud smell a slight smell of petrol from engine bay but cudnt work out were it was comin from, he didnt mention anythin bout my bottom end but my mate had few goes in it an said it needed 1 soon, cuz wen i pull off in 1st slowly an keep revs@2000-3000 rpm an in secound gear also it makes a clonkin/knockin/diesel-ish noise (completely diff noise 2 wat i was onabout in earlier post) its not loud an doesnt affect performance

Again. the petrol smell is probably petrol mixing into the oil from blow by. If your cap pops off you have pressure which shouldnt be there basically.
