my car runs for 3 seconds then cuts out...........
i have an s1 erst
when i turn the ignition key the fuel pump primes, then when i start the car it starts first time, runs for about 3 seconds then cuts out.
the fuel pump isn't running so im guessing its the fuel pump relay..... but why?
the only thing that is any different from a normal erst is that rather than the wire at pin 1 on the relay going to the tacho, it goes straight to the green wire on the coil, could this be the problem, or are these relays prone to breaking???
please please help, i need my baby running.....

The relays do give up, do it could well be faulty.
if i took a feed from the green wire going from the ecu to the coil, then in theory that should work as its a pulsed wire, right????
the black/ yellow wire coming from the pin on its own on the relay, is that an input or an output from the relay?
thanks for your help, much appreciated

dunno if itll be any help but i had this exact same problem on a rst i had last year, tried all sorts of things as u do, last thing i changed was the little black box attched to the side of the metering head, problem solved.....

you mean the suppressor tthat has the green wire from the coil going into it and then one coming out of it that goes to the rev counter and fuel pump relay? if thats the one you mean, then i'll change that, give it ago and see if it helps
emfpa? i havent heard of this before but will check it out definately.
if anyone could tell me what the black/yellow wire does that comes out of the silver fuel pump relay, and whether its an input or an output, then i would be very pleased.

the Electro Magnetic Fuel Pressure Actuator.
would this stop my fuel pump pumping, as im pretty sure my pump isnt kicking in. the fuel pump works if connect power straight to it, so to me this suggests that the relay isnt telling it to turn on, does this sound right?

Mine did this and it turned out to be a vacume leak the pipe had come off from the bottom of the turbo, could be summat like that. have ya tried taking the air filter off and holding the fuel flap down and seeing if it runs like that?
have you tried to rev the car or will it die out straight away
have you checked the a/f meter
also have you put a direct live to the pump and then start it to c if it runs better
my series 1 did this and the join from the silver relay for my fuel pump had a dodgy join from who ever fitted the cut alarm to it

right, ive been playing about with my my car today and think ive cracked it. basically i think the fuel relay is fooked. its not reading the input signal from the coil to let it know its running. the reason it starts is because the black/yellow wire going to it gets the fuel pump going, but as soon as you stop cranking the black/yellow wire stops pulsing and the wire from the coil (back of tacho) takes over. on mine as soon as the black/yellow wire stops pulsing the fuel output to the fuel pump stops, which means the relay isnt reading the input from the coil (even though the input voltage is there as i tested it). so hopefully with a new relay it should be thumbs up.
