Default fuel consumption

what are the ways of improving fuel consumption on a stage 3 saff.

my car is a daily driver and gets used for lots of long and short journeys. i have converted it to closed loop but this has had very little effect on the mpg as i do so many short journeys in it.

i have noticed recently, it can smell a little of fuel on start up, and occasionally puffs out smoke if booted when still warming up (not ragged, just a little boost )

what governs the fuelling on start up? the Co screw is set correct for 0.5% CO at idle when fully warm.

will be changing the thermostat and CTS soon as these need to be spot on for the closed loop to do its job effectively.

any other suggestions, other than walking ??

You are missing the cheapest solution...

Buy a car for about £500 quid from the auction - pref tax and tested such as a 1.8 mondeo. Run this as your daily runner, and use the cossie for the w/ends only!

This is an approach I have used exhaustively. May sound like a joke, but it will save you a butt load!!

tbh we used to use the cossie daily, but have just bought an escort gti to replace the series 2 as its cheaper to run, will prob only be using the Cossie on a weekend now it is the best option, especially if you tend to only do short journeys

The problem is the short journies. The car never gets out of the cold enrichment cycle and so will be using excess fuel in this phase of it's running. You will also end up with condensation in the oil, due to the engine not warming up sufficiently to evaporate this, and this will cause a nasty milky substance to appear on the oil cap.

Solution:
Do NOT use the car on short journies. Sorry, but that is the ONLY cure, other than getting one of those heaters that you plug into the cooling system that heat the water to operating temperature before you start your journey, and so the car doesn't use the cold start cycle of the map.

well i have done the maths and the 300 quid to buy a car, 100 quid tax, 100 quid mot 500 quid insurance and the fuel on top it doesnt make financial sense to run 2 cars....its just too expensive.

just wondering how i can make the cossie as economical as possible

alternatively i'll be looking for a new car in the future, which will be a real shame

Clearly making no allowance for wear and tear on the cossie, plus depreciation of value......

Not to mention the fact that many insurers will allow you to have one set of no claims on two cars, plus you can reduce the overall mileage you do on the Cos for insurance purp as well !

I would no way go back to using the cos as my daily transp.

my insurers wont let me share my no claims between cars, and other ones that will will want more for the premium on the cos anyway

depreciation is not an issue really, it will be worth the same if its got 102k, or 105k in the summer. it doesnt get abused.

i have thought about a second car....alot but i am just not flush enough to afford it, and before, when i had a second car (ex girlfriends) mine was a weekend car and hardly ever got used , it was always easier to take hers.

i think the saff makes a remarkably good day to day car, bit enough to get mates in, comfy, easy to drive and fast.

the only drawbacks are the fact its thirsty and i am always a little bit wary of where to park it, still a bit paranoid about it

Default fuel

Turn the power down or buy a run around, only way to do it bruv, When I first bought my car it came with stg 1 and had 263 BHP, I then fitted the greens with an Ahmed chip and pectel board, 3 bar map,-31 actuator and it had around 300-310 BHP, I kept my fuel reciepts for a month and they totalled up to £270 After that I thought fuck this and bought a run around.

Now I have more power and spent more money on my Cosworth its summer use for shows, weekends and escapades only, truthfully I would not be able to afford driving it all the time and I want to preserve the car too

add your fuel bill up for the month .. then look at how much it will cost you over a year .. im sure you will be surprised
will be just as easy to get another small runaround...
if charli was doing £270 a month thats a possible £3k+ a year
