Default Steering judder on 4x4 Sapphire, please help!

My Sapphire has a steering judder which has become more noticable since I changed the wheels to 17" ones, I've had the wheels balanced again and it seemed to help, changed the anti-roll bar bushes cause they were shot and the bottom ball joints.

Had the 4 wheel alingment checked at a Ford dealer and they said it's spot on.

The dealer suggested it was maybe cause the tyres I've had which came on the wheels (brand new) aren't that expensive, I fail to see how this could affect it to such an extent, seemed to be really they just don't know. It's exactly like the wheels are out of balance but they've been done twice now and they're brand new!

Any ideas guys?

Thanks

Tried new discs ?

Is it 1 side or both ?

Do the wheels have the correct centre bore or a spigot ring fitted ?

The discs are fine, seems it's both sides with the N/S a bit worse. The wheels came with a plastic centre to fit round the hubs. Seems worse after I had the 4 wheel alignment done!

Had a prob like this on my old 4x4

Turned out to be there was shit/corrosion on the hub centre so the wheels were not seating on the hub properly

Like you I had tried balancing etc, different tyres etc,and all it needed was a bit of emery cloth on the hub and a smear of copper grease and it was sorted

Pissed me off the tyre places I had to balance the wheels/change tyres never noticed it

Just bought new discs and pads, I'll fit them tomorrow. Changed the front wheels to the back and vice versa, this seems to make the wobble a bit worse.

Fitted the old wheels and it's a lot better, but still there.

Doesn't seem to be CV's (I hope!) The wobble/vibration gets worse at about 50 and over but up to 50 seems rough through the floor pan (maybe just the tyre noise I'm not used to though)

Cheers

This prob has most likely always been there you may just be noticing it more due to new wheels and in my experience the usual prob are the hubs they may need facing

years ago they used to balance wheel hub and disc all together to avoid this prob but i dont think you will find anywhere that still does this.

you can however try rotating the wweels round on the studs

Hope i could help.

I had crap tyres on new wheels last year... it was only when they actually cracked on the side walls that they were exchanged... then the problem went away!!!

Expensive oz wheels - drove me mad!!

Did it make your steering wobble? Admittedly my tyres aren't the best but surely no tyre can do that to a car!

Tyres rubbing the shocks when cornering? You got the right size tyres on those wheels?

Well, fitted the discs and pads this morning, rubbed up the hubs and...... NO DIFFERENCE!! lol

Only thing I can try now is getting the wheels balanced on the car and the CV's if the wheel balancing doesn't sort it.

do the wheels have plastic caps that locate them onto the hub?

if not they may need some ,as just bolting the wheels on does not mean they are exactly central .
