why would a home built PC be more reliale than manufacturer built? youre still using the same cheap shit components.

Well presumably if you are building your own PC, you wouldn't use the "same cheap shit components" you spanner, that would be a bit daft wouldn't it.

for example then...

how many people do you think buy the cheap 40quid motherboards rather than the 120quid ones...?

i saw some statistics somewhere once and the cheap and cheerful components made up something like 90% of the component sales

I built my own PC 5 years ago and i'm still using it today. I've only had to replace the power supply once and i've upgraded my ram modules. I would suggest that you don't buy from PC World as the deals are never really good deals and that on the face of it building your own bit by bit looks a lot cheaper but by the time you've paid P&P for the seperate parts and the components themselves it all adds to pretty much the same IMO...

Try looking at some of these websites which have some good options;

Misco - www.misco.co.uk
Novatech - www.novatech.co.uk
AUT Direct - www.autdirect.co.uk
Overclockers - www.overclockers.co.uk

Hope this helps.

I think building your own pc is good for when you want to perform a certain task, gaming or video encoding as examples. I you just want a quickish PC to browse the net, type documents etc.. then something like this is decent enough http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/sto...4&category_oid=

It comes with a 19"TFT and genuine windows software which has got to be worth £150 on there own. I find www.scan.co.uk sell decent branded items and as Galbally said, not all motherboards are the same.

Its all easy plugging the bits in and installing the base drivers, but if the PC crashes and you dont have the knowledge to diagnose and repair the fault then your stuck.

the other alternative is to get www.pcoption.co.uk to build you a custom spec 1 and there prices are pretty good!

But those statistics are most likely due to people just replacing things on their Dell/HP/whatever workstation as and when they die, with like for like replacements.
I doubt very much those stats are only for system builders, and in answer to your first question, I would expect most people that build their own PC would buy the best value for money motherboard for their application.
Not necesarily the cheapest or the most expensive, but the best spec for the best price with reliability in mind.
