How does the Knock Sensor work exactly step by step?

How does the Knock Sensor work exactly step by step?

I know the knock sensor only starts working when the engine makes a specific type of noise which we can't here but how does it how much to retard the engine by?

*think* it's 12degrees. Different ECU's do it differently though. The car goes totally flat.

i think knock sensors work by picking up the frequency of the noise rather than the type of noise knock generates but not 100% on that.
