UPDATED -Cosworth Hydraulic Cam Adjuster Question
I am in the process of checking over the standard shakedown engine thats going in my racecar, and when checking the cam adjusters I found that half are just marked INA as per standard fitment and half are
INA f 46516 75 nr (probably aftermarket).
Now the issue is that the INA marked ones are pumped up solid when the plunger is pushed by my finger (apart from one) bu the others are pretty spongy even when immersed in oil and the air is manually pumped out of them and are horizontal in the oil bath
My guess is the the pumped up ones are fine, as per previous experience, and that I could have problems with the others.
These had all been newly installed and all still look fresh so I had planned on re-using them as its only a short term shakedown install, but the question is :-
should they pump up solid manually in which case the Plain INA ones are fine and I just swap over the others, or will the others just pump up fine as well once installed.
Appreciate any help from experienced people not just guesses as that what I am doing anyway.
cheers

If it's my old engine mate. They should all be the same as when i had the mishap with the bolt going through the cambelt i replaced all the tappets as i had them here.Brand new off Bren @ Apex.So why they should have different numbers i dont know.
Stretch, that the thing as I remember you said they had all been recently replaced, it looks as if half are from one batch, and half from another.
The head had been stored vertically by me which is why some have probably drained, but it only seems to be the marked ones and the plain ones are still solid.
You said she was a bit tappety after the install and I thought that it may have been the marked ones making the noise.
Not a problem mate as the fact that they were new was a bonus, but I dont want to risk putting the marked ones back in if they are going to rattle.
any experts awake yet
cheers

Mark,
I have manually pumped them in an oil bath to clear all the air, but they are still spongy even when all that comes out is old oil.
I appreciate I cannot replicate 3000 pumps per minute but dont know whether to risk it - I have had lifters from Bren before and they were all plain and worked fine, so I am a bit worried that some VW ones may have got mixed in which apparently are slightly different, but I guess even so these would pump up just the same.

before i fit used lifters (of a know quantity ) i wil always remove all the oil by compressing the lifter until its spongy anyway , then i will fit them to the engine and let the engine fill them back up , that way i know theres no shit or old engine oil in them from their previous use , yes they rattle alot when 1st started , but within minutes they are all usually quiet. i never reuse HLA's without squeezing them out 1st , ive had to many engines prior to this method that have had no compression because the lifters have expanded too much whilst out holding the valves open !!

cheers Mark thats what I wanted to hear, I will clear out the plain ones until they are spongy and then install the lot.
thanks
ps
I seem to remember that on the 4x4 they improved the lifter internally so that may explain the number difference, and I may just have a set of 2wd and 4x4 ones.

I always do but these have hardly any miles on them as stretch fitted them then swapped engines virtually straight away, just wanted to make sure the number bit on them was ok, plus I am doing the job today and dont want to wait for another set.
Gareth - yep having a play with my bits to go into the F3000, got a small flywheel now and just need to get a twin plate clutch then I can make up the gearbox adapter and start dry fitting it all

have you thought about racing it?
Now cleaned up these lifters and found that internally they are completely different.
The unmarked INA ones have the outer reservoir then an internal bucket with an inner spring and an outer casing.
The marked ones have the same reservoir, but an internal bucket with both an internal spring and a spring which sits between the bucket and reservoir.
Never seen these sold as 2wd or 4x4 but it would seem the marked ones are a later version as fitted to the 4x4 but both are interchangable.
Therefore when changing lifters go for the marked ones as they appear to be a better design preventing start up rattles as the outer spring pushes up the lifter from the reservoir preventing it sticking and/or hydraulicing
Be interested to hear if the traders can confirm this.
Gareth - not sure yet, the master plan is to get it road registered for daylight use and use it as a track day car

crack fool,,,,, need a test driver?
if you are thinking about racing it,, i can introduce you too a friend who does the welsh championship,, and theres some tidy people and motors go
I am basically going to get it all together over the winter, use this motor to run it all up and then put in something a bit more potent. Once all thats done then I will see how I go from there, me and the old man used to do sprints and hillclimbs years ago and I would not mind entering things like that with it ,so I will deffo be interested in meeting them once its ready
cheers mate.
ps how do you fancy fine tuning the 3dr for me if you have the time, as I am putting a stage 1 chip, actuator and 4x4 cooler on it this weekend. I am still in Cardiff but can call down whenever you are free- happy to pay you for your time.
