... Hey,
Right, basically i'm seriously considering, once i've paid off what money i owe in a few months, possibly taking out a loan to buy myself a 3door.
Only thing is, the insurance, with me being 19, would be silly... i would imagine around the £4000 mark for TPFT cover! (only had a quote for a sapphire so far)
So, my question to you, is, are they worth that?
Is it worth me spending that much on insurance for such an old car that i've never had an experience with owning or living with, but have always loved (even more so after my trip out in Stu's beast at the Cheshire meet - Thanks)
Your opinions please!....

Why don't you actually do some online quotes so you have an idea of just how much you would be looking at insure one (was the sapphire quotes so high?!) most will stipulate its got to be fully comp, in fact sometimes when I've done quotes TPFT is more if not only a few quid cheaper

i would wait a little while yet, cant justify spending £4k on insurance
what you driving at the moment?
why not get an RST first and wait a few years
cos its not just gonna be forking out 4k for insurance, theres all the money to buy the car, then double that for the years for the repair bills!

After i've paid what i owe my parents, and my finance on my bike (another few months), my only outgoings each month will be £100 rent (the joys of living at home) and car running costs, insurance and any loan taken to purchase said car.

Not being funny, but around £400 per month in insurance, plus the loan £100-£200 a month ?
You're into mortgage money here, I know you only live once, but unless you have a property already, get on the ladder asap... spending money on cars is not worth it in the long run, been there, done it, would rather have my mortgage paid off rather than the memories of the car's I've had that cost me so much...
Also, if you're being quoted that much, there's a reason... lack of experience or bad driving history.
Assuming you're lacking experience, maybe you should listen to what the insurers tell you... they're saying the car is far too dangerous for you (and them)... prove your abilities by gaining ncb and then go get the car of your dreams

Thats very true... but as i'm doing an apprenticeship for the next 5 years (day release at uni studying BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying) i'm not likely to be earning enough to take out a mortgage unfortunately!
I'm starting now... been in the job for just a couple of weeks, and i'm earning £12k a year.
That gets me what.... £50k mortgage max? Unless i'm mistaken?

Been driving 2 years... perfect history... one years no claims... (would be two, but unfortunately i didn't realise when i cancelled my policy early it wouldn't be transferred over to my new insurer
)
Wait until the insurance is more reasonable. i assume your quotes are done on a standard cossie which:
1) Is boring
2) There are hardly any standard one left and the ones that are, are normally concourse condition costing thousands to buy in the 1st place.
Be sensible

To be honest, i just want something a bit special... i change my cars so often, i want something i can keep and enjoy.
Fair enough,
Simple answer from me is this:
Can you afford to pay £400 per month for insurance?
Do you want to spend 50-60% of your monthly wages on car insurance
If the ansers to both the above is yes, then go for it. Answer no to either 1 of them and stop yourself.

Why don't you try www.confused.com. I have zero no claims bonus and have always been on my mums insurance.
I just got insurance in my own name on a Focus ST for £743 fully comp thru admiral. Mind you I am 24 but £4000 seems a tad ridiculous for a 19 year old on a 3dr.

)As for the mortgage, maybe you can't afford one now, but if you put £400+ away every month in a savings account, you'll be well on the way to a deposit when your wages increase.
Then it will be a good time to buy a car
Very sorry this is sensible advice you probably don't want to hear
i dont rate these online insurance quote companys
never once had a quote that could come anywhere near what RSOC boncaster quote or adrian flux
try them too
if your already driving a grp 15 car, sell it n get an escort RST
defo gotta av one of them before a cossie, cheap cars, n cheap to get good bhp out of them
load o phone, get one of them, then move up to a cossie in a few years

very good advice from frog
what is it with youngsters these days? they want everything and want it now. i started out at 18 with a mk2 escort 1.3, and changed the engine to a 1.1 to get cheaper insurance.
but then things started to go wrong and i must've wasted thousands on crappy old cars and modifications and all that bollocks

Complete madness
As frog suggested
400 Quid a month insurance
Plus running cost
Plus loan cost
= one very skint lad.
Ok you could have a 3dr but no cash to
fill it up with petrol
no money to take your girlfriend anywhere
No cash to go out boozing with
etc etc etc
Anyway save your cash and buy something that your not constantly worrying about it breaking

I've been in a sierra cosworth, and it was awesome!
As much as i agree with the insurance being insane, its when i look at what it costs to insure much lesser cars, that it seems worth the extra pennies!
Cheers for the advice though guys

100 a month rent.
Leaving £300 to run the car and spend on whatever i want?
ive known chip put over £100 of optimax through his cossie replica on a weekend, youd need to run another car, youd not be able to fuel the fuckign thing.
im in a similar situation to you, was gonna do the exact same thing, am also 19, but decided to keep my xr2 and put money into that. i paid £830 tpft last year for it, will have a years ncb come october so should be cheaper next year to insure. will quicker than any sub 300bhp cossie when its out the garage, and cost a fraction to run/own.

I know how it is to run thirsty cars matey... my first was a 1.6... economical... now i have a 2.5 V6... i'm lucky to get 20mph taking it easy!
I know for a fact that a cosworth can do that sort of mpg when driven carefully..
RS Turbo mate. Get one cheapish, insure it and get used to a turbo ford.
Then in about 10 years after spending ££££££'s on it, get a 3dr
Seriously though RS is the way to go

you won't have enough money for maintenance, things will start to detioriate, it will get unreliable, break down, possibly even melt the engine and you'll be left with nothing. forget it until later.
an oil change, needed every year as a minimum really, will set you back at least £40 for example. then there's the expensive fuel, super at a minimum, spark plugs, tyres etc, etc.

What sort of performance could i expect to get from a lightly modified RS then?

I'd have thought you should change it every 3/4000 on such a high performance engine?
