Usual Modification questions - sorry guys (cossies)
Hi guys,
Well the car is sat outside & Im chuffed as buggery.
Had a decent drive & ok anything is going to seem slow compared to the GTST drag car but it does seem slower than the GTST when it was std.
+ points is the handling - bloody hell it would run rings around a GTST on the track on the handling stakes
The cossie is 100% bog std now & just a few pointers would be great:
Stage 1 - is that the usual air filter, better exhaust etc? - what kind of gains typically do you get?
Stage 2 - fmic, larger fuel pump, larger throttle body, oil cooler, bigger injectors ? - gains?
Stage 3 - bigger turbo, manifold, plenum, ecu mods?,
What are the std internals (pistons, crank, rods etc) typically good for maximum before they pop?
What is recommended max boost on the std turbo etc?
Sorry for all the questions but hust keen to know what everyone has found to be the benchmarks, typical costs & gains ?
Ideally long term would like to get it to say 400 - 450 bhp at the wheels & make it a great track car that will eat Skylines for breakfast
cheers
John

Stg1 is just filter, exhuast, stg1 chip, 15psi (or more if live mapped) boost, will give between 260 and 300bhp depending on chip (or more if its live mapped).
Stg2- Ignore it, waste of time.
Stg3- Stg1 plus RS500 intercooler, green inj, more boost (23-25psi), suitable chip or live map, ideally a bigger turbo, and maybe a uprated HG if can be bothered. Gives 300-330bhp.
Beyond that its up to you.
Standard crank and rods are good for 600bhp+
Std pistons are 500bhp+ ones really, but best off dropping the compression so can run even more boost on pump fuel.
Non ported head is still good for 400odd, as is std cams really IIRC.
2wd exhaust manifold is fine even at 500bhp+
Std inlet is good for 400bhp+ too. Std throttle body good for well over 500bhp.
Std fuel pump is good for night on 400bhp IIRC but will prob be getting tied now.
Managment on cossies is live mappable as standard, so no issues there, can easily upgrade to 4x4 Cos L8 managment or Esc Cos P8 managment with next to no mods, and then you got options to run anti lag, water inj, coilpack ign, etc etc without spending silly money on other ECUs.
Cossies are remarkably simple to tune, and decent prices, and even some mappers who can map properly too, which is rare, lol.

Brilliant & cheers for that.
So upgrade the chip on the existing ECU rather than messing about fitting aftermarket ECU's then like we do with the Skylines ie/ F Con V pro/AEM etc?
In terms of exhaust make what usually gives the best gains?
Air filter - K & N etc ?
Looks really good news in terms of std internals etc then - well upto the job in terms of capacity etc

No need to upgrade ECU mate, not even at 500bhp+ spec, they already decent and run MAP sensor as standard (oh yeah, will need to run a upgraded 3bar MAP sensor and uprated actuator on stg3 onwards, but they cost bugger all, like most cossie bits), can be live mapped as standard, can happily run 1000cc injectors on Cossie managment, and like said, L8/P8 later versions gives you an easy upgrade option for Anti Lag (i mean PROPER on the move antilag, not just launch control
), coilpack ign, and so on, as well as better part throttle drivability if mapped right.
Second hand L8 and P8 ecus cost bugger all really, esp compared to Skyline prices!
Can just plug in a chip at stg 1-3 spec, but a live map will gain you more as its more precise, but not as cheap!
Exhaust- Take your pick, they all 3in bore and decent. Mongoose is prob your best bet.
Filter- Well TBH the stock airbox and a decent panel filter is allegedly good for mega power, but i like the sound when got a big cone filter, lol.
Get hold of what most tuning companies call a "GrpA" one, which is a big filter on a alloy trumpet.
Check out- www.motorsport-developments.co.uk
Stu is your live mapping and general chips and stuff god, decent prices too for jus general tuning stuff, if you search here its easy to get the general feel for whats what and who is what
Getting hold of latest copys of Fast Ford and Performance Ford is a good plan too, tons of adverts for parts, with prices too (none of this £CALL bollocks, lol), so is a good look, and can check out the other cars specs too, as always tons of Cossie feature cars every month.
(Dont bother using search function unless you looking for summat specific, no need, jus keep going back thru the pages and check thread titles, wont have to go back more than a few days to find lots of relelvant info that will teach you plenty)

can run a 4wd intercooler rather than a 500 sized large intercooler on stage 3 but might have to limit the boost to around the 20 psi mark, would deffo replace the fuel pump and wireing to go stage 3 and above. never can be too carefull on these old cars

Best of deciding now your ideal power figure, rather than worrying about stages as such, although all of Stavros' info is bang on the money
If it's 450bhp then there's a LOT of stuff you'll need,just a few bits;
Good strong engine, prefereably rebuilt, doesn't necessarily have to be 200 block, contrary to popular belief, although would be better,
modified cylinder head, varying specs depending who you go for,but would need to be ported and run different cams,
larger enough turbo,i'd go GT30,some stick to T4
large enough injectors,guess you'd need 600cc+ for 450bhp
Large RS500 style FMIC,i'd recommend PRO-ALLOY
replace all boost pipes with Silicone items,Roose motorsport seem the best at the moment
Grp A 044 fuel Pump and new wiring to it (weak point on most cossies)
New engine wiring loom (another weakness)
3 bar Map Sensor
Uprated crankcase breather system
then if it's 4x4 you'll be needing STRONG gearbox/diffs cos the crap,2wd will be fine if in decent nick
for track then there's a few companies out there that do decent suspension/bodyshell setup's, Adrenaline,Zoo Motorsport spring to mind...or you could try sourcing WRC or touring car spec bits
probably lots more i'd not thought of but you'll get there
