Steering question after changing steering wheel...
Ive put a MOMO wheel on my car and when I drive it it doesnt self centre any more.... Is it to tight? How tight should it be? I took it off and put my old one back on to see but it still doesnt self centre... Is something broken or worn or am I missing something when putting them on? Any help is greatly appreciated as this is a potential dangerous thinggg. Ahhhhh
Had the same on mine the colomn had dropped when the steering wheel was off and the lower bush under the dash was not in line when the new one went on (look under the colomn past the black ribbed section and the bush will be at the bottom of this )
exactly as twins says. And it's a ball ache to sort. Thereis a bush that slides into the outer steering column, and it can only go in one way - there is a groove and notch. U have to hold it in position as you tighten the steering wheel nut, as this draws the bush into the outer column.
So when I look down the column I will see the bush and know where it goes? Is there a way of doing it i.e take off the steering column cowling etc... Basically the main thing is will I know it and know where it goes when I see it?? Cheers
I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!

Ok so remove drivers seat, look bvack up at the steering column should be able to where its come from and how it goes back yeah? Help it back in and when I tighten the wheel up it will force it back in? Sorry if im sounding stupid just wanna make sure I get it right and no desrespect but I dont want quick fit messing with my car....
So this morning ive taken out the seat and managed to get under the column and see the bush... It was a bit mangled but I think I managed to get it back in but couldnt really see where the notch bit was on the steering column. If im underneath so looking up at the steering column is it on the right kind of in line with one of the bolts that hold the steering column thing onto the car? Also will it matter that the bush is a little mangled? One side went in fine but one side was kind of bulbed out slightly like it hadnt gone in correctly... Any more help is graetly appreciated.
they are pennies from ford.
Slide the outer column off. U have to take the cowling off, the stalks, the bonnet cable, and the four nuts holding the column in place. That only takes 5 mins, it's easy.
You slide the column up over the inner shaft (that the wheel bolts to). At the bottom of this shaft there is another bush that the one u mangled turrns against. Get a new one of those too, and coat the lot in greace. Also, the white tolerance ring under the steering wheel - get a new one of those too. I'd get a few, as they cheap if u mangle them.

Thanks mate doesnt sound to bad now, what exactly do I coat in grease? Also how do I know if the tolerance ring is knaked? When Ive got the column out pop the new 2 bushes in and put it all back together? Can I put the new bush( the one I mangled) when the column is out? Then just slide it back in or will I have to line it up again? Cheers for all your help I will go to ford on Monday.....
the pointed end of the tolerance ring can be chewed up. I dont even inspect them for the sake of 20p......
The bush u have been messing with goes into the outer column. The other one is on the shaft, and it's quite a tight fit. Cover the shaft and inside of bush with grease so u can slide it down back over the shaft - there is a locatng pin at bottom of shaft. Coat the surface where it rubs against the other bush so it's nice and smooth - basically just dip both bushes in a load of lube and u cant go wrong.
As you take the outer column off - there is a spring which goes into the end of it - underneath the bush. That unfortunetly stops u assembling it off the shaft. The spring just pushes the bush back out - but will be able to see how it lines up easy with it off the car. Take not the position of the spring as u pull it out - thin end against the bush....
