the pointed end of the tolerance ring can be chewed up. I dont even inspect them for the sake of 20p......
The bush u have been messing with goes into the outer column. The other one is on the shaft, and it's quite a tight fit. Cover the shaft and inside of bush with grease so u can slide it down back over the shaft - there is a locatng pin at bottom of shaft. Coat the surface where it rubs against the other bush so it's nice and smooth - basically just dip both bushes in a load of lube and u cant go wrong.
As you take the outer column off - there is a spring which goes into the end of it - underneath the bush. That unfortunetly stops u assembling it off the shaft. The spring just pushes the bush back out - but will be able to see how it lines up easy with it off the car. Take not the position of the spring as u pull it out - thin end against the bush....
