Just looking at the turbo repair kits and wondered what they fixed? would

I have been offered that smokes a bit, but has no play, would one of them fix this and also would a turbo kit fix a turbo with shaft play?

technically speaking it would 'fix' one with no shaft play as long as it was just the seals that were fucked but the unit wouldnt be balanced and may 'screach' or just not last very long!
If there is shaft play then either the shaft itself and/or the bearings are buggered so generally speaking the normal repair kits wouldnt fix this and you would be looking at a whole re-build/new unit

you could just 'fix' it then bung it on e-bay

what do you mean when you say 'screach' do you mean a screach sound ? I get a kinda screach noise when I change gear just before the dump valve......it only does it when its above 15psi though, is that what you mean

My seal had perished so it was smoking more than a 14 year old outside Asdas on a friday night so I bought a repair kit off motorsport developments - fitted it exactly as they said and it cured the turbo 100%.

Well worth a try at £80 or so.

i mean screach.. i would say the problem is the turbo is normally so finely balanced, normally at least 100000 Rpm, when you dismantle it and put it back together the balancing is obviously going to be a bit off.. hence it will make a noise (esp at high boost)
What you are experiencing 'could' be surge IIRC this will make the same sort of noise as the compressor whell is heavily oversped
