MK3/4 ERST sumps... help please
Been told to get a MK3 sump on my car as they use a cork gasket and its easier to fit with less chance of leakage.
Can someone confirm this for me?? I thought they were the same.
Apparently they dont have the nobbles of the MK4

I don't think there is a difference. Also, I have never seen the four piece cork sump gasket on any of the pre 86 cars I've worked with. The rubber gasket seals quite well the straight pieces, but where the half circles are, the gasket usually is not compressed at all. So my advise would be to use the rubber gasket, but use plenty of additional silicon sealant around the half circles. These are also the lowest points and therefore likely to leak.
My series 1 has the nobbles on the sump
Also, i used the rubber gasket and it has never leaked on me!!
My mate had an s1 and he fitted a cork gasket but it leaked all the time! One thing i did do was to bolt the gasket to the sump ( it came all crumpled up in a packet!
) to let it sit overnight, then glued it to the sump.Just take your time and you'll have np probs!!
