you need the router to dial out and get the net then share it to the pc via a network cable and to the other pc via wireless.
At the mo you have the router acting as a wireless hub.
I take it you have a USB modem or similar goiving your main PC the net??

it was using the usb cable from the ntl broadband box but now using the ethernet port in the broadband box going straight to the router then the router is connected to the computer using another ethernet cable.
In theory the computer was just used to set up the router but when it gets turned off so does the internet

thats how its wired but i think my settings are wrong! I had to detect it manually because when I first set up ntl I had it set up with the usb cable, it all went tits up and couldn't set up because of this.
I plugged in the ethernet and managed it without the setup cd but now when the computer turns off, all the lights stay the same on the router but no internet connection is in the air through wireless even though it can be connected to the network

ok, to get into the router type in 192.168.0.1
in internet explorer where you would usually type a website address.
Username for the router should be admin and the password should be password. this should bring you into the router settings page. Then in basic settings you'll see the bit for username password etc. You forgetting them I cant help with
try phoning NTL? although good luck with that one if you do

You have to with NTL as well.
What I would do is power everything off.
Power up the STB or the NTL Channel box and wait for 2 mins
Plug the Ethernet cable to the router then power the router up.
Plug the PC/Laptop in to the router and do what 89XR2 said and open a browser and go to 192.168.0.1
in the "do your connection require a user name & password select yes
enter your username (without the @ntlworld.com on the end
Enter your password.
Save all this and reset the router (should be an option on the left)
that should give you connection to the WWW
then go and configure wireless (without security) and make sure it works.
Once this is done, start setting the security up.
