If a turbocharger is just meant to blow air into the engine, why can't some sort of electronic compressor be used instead? It wouldn't depend on the engine spooling it up with exhaust gas etc.
Seems like a good idea to me. I'm sure that there's a good reason why this isn'tdone, and I'd like to know what it is please

essentially you're talking about a supercharger.
to actually acheive what you are talking about would require a lot of power to generate the pressure needed- not really phesible in a car!

had a 3hr arguement about this with my dad a cpl months back , he was blabbing that its more efficent and boost can be set and monitored better , blah blah
but he knows nowt about turbos and he just thinks he does , i told him it could be possible with enoghy devolopment and money but its not really cost effective and standard exhaust /belt powerd induction works just fine
