If a turbocharger is just meant to blow air into the engine, why can't some sort of electronic compressor be used instead? It wouldn't depend on the engine spooling it up with exhaust gas etc.

Seems like a good idea to me. I'm sure that there's a good reason why this isn'tdone, and I'd like to know what it is please
