Default Help needed with oil pressure.........

Right ive just picked my new cossie up and when it is ticking over the oil light comes on so i checked the oil level and it is just under the max so its not that but i noticed when it was ticking over the oil pressure gauge is only reading 15psi and go's upto 40-50 psi when driving.............
Is this ok or should it be higher the car is a 2wd saff and the oil was hot

I think it needs to be at least 25psi on tickover, even when hot

First things first - try changing the oil and filter - i reccomend a genuine motorcraft filter, and Silkoline Pro-S 10W/50 - this shoiuld give you a hot idle of between 20 and 30psi at approximately 70 celcius oil temp.

At the moment, i'm using Pro-S 5/40 as the weather has been freezing, but the hot idle never goes below 20psi at 850rpm, and fast running (above 2500rpm) is always between 55 and 60psi when hot

your supposed to run a fresh engine on a cheap mineral oil to bed the piston rings in. So the oil could be the cause of a lower oil pressure. I would get the run in period / mileage done then put a decent oil in (not Castrol RS LOL) and see what the pressure is then.

was the oil pump not changed when the rebuild was done?

the pump only provides the flow, not the pressure

IMO 50 psi on stone cold isnt enough mate..

the pressure comes form the oil being forced into small places like, bearings cooling channels etc..

as these wear and increase in size it becomes easier for the oil to get in and hence reduces the oil pressure..

i see almost 80 psi on idle if its been lying over nite.

Mine is just over 50 on idle. Goes down to 35ish on hot idle.

As said above, start with the basics, good oil/filter etc

Could be a dodgy/cheap gauge

Get pressure tested at a garage with a proper pressure tester if your really worried

If the worst comes to the worst an oil pump is a lot cheaper than a re-build m8,not worth giving it any grief if you suspect the pump
