Default Rather unusual gearbox techy question, for bernie or others.

How would a normal helical gearbox stand up to being driven backwards?

Ie have an engine that turns the other way to normal, and then rotate the hole lot round 180 degrees, so the gearbox is in backwards and then driven backwards, so that the car still ends up going forwards.

VERY random question i know!

Honda engines rotate backwards to normal engines, ie they physically rotate the crank the opposite way around.

If you wanted to put a honda engine onto say a FWD ford or vauxhall gearbox, you would have to do so by then rotating the engine and gearbox round so that the gearbox was sat the honda way round (ie on drivers side of the bay) rather than on the passenger side like normal.

This would mean all the cogs inside are turning backwards compared to normal.

.
Wouldn't this put the diff and driveshafts at the front, under the radiator?

Did I hear you say Sh^t?

Or are you going to turn the diff. upside down as well?

.

In a front engined car it would mount the engine a lot further back than it normally is for a vauxall engine.

i would say it would fuck up very fast

all the thrust from the gears would be going the other way, bearings which normally have no thrust would have a thrust loaded!

wouldnt know how long it would last,, guessing not long

Why not install the engine the "correct" way round in the new car?

Gareth, thats pretty much as i thought then, thats fucked up an overwise damn fine plan, lol

Alex, because installed backwards a gearbox that was from a 4wd front engined car would have the transfer box in the right place for a rear engined 4wd car.
