Default surge protectors, are they worth getting?

As title, looking through the Argos catalogue today and saw some of these and thought hmmm maybe i should invest in one?

Id just plug in all my high value things like stereo, pc+ moniter and the ones i was looking at in Argos even have points to plug in a phone/broadband etc.

Guess its worth getting for £15-£20 if its potentially protecting thousands of pounds worth of gear

Anybody else got one? and more to the point, do they work!?

Dont bother with them. Last one I had couldnt protect a cold glass of piss.

Was out for the day, bit of a storm, came back to find HDD and modem shot.

Doesnt really matter to me now as I just run laptops on battery and charge when needed.

well this is what ive just bought, i dout you had one of these? i expect you had a cheapy one because if it was Belkin you could have claimed something off them for damaged equipment.

Be warned, if you have cable your still at risk. Ive had 2 strikes nuke modems/routers/network cards and a pc. Power was supplied via a protected UPS and it caught the surge, the coax cable was the only unprotected entry point/

I too have had a pc hit whilst using in the storm, luckily it only blew the 56k modem as it was many years ago, the pc was fine. For general house purposes a surge protector is recommended. About a year ago i had at large screen tv go and though nothing of it until a couple of weeks later a newish dyson went from the same source.

Went out and got a surge protector straight away unti it was sorted.
