Just been to get some oil and stuff for the mk2 and was driving my 8v 1600 xr2i home and the battery light came on, not bright but was brighter when switched the indicators on etc...

Ok, fan belts snapped or slipping i thought, possibly alternator fooked. So i get home, fan belts on and tight, alt must be fooked i though....

So i knocked the ignition off, took the keys out and the battery light is still on

Anyone know why or whats causing it ?

Bad earth mate, also check all the wires on the alternator as they might be shorting out somewhere.

 

Cheers AJ ive just been out and started it and theres a real whining coming from down there so im guessing the alt is fooked. Would a knackered alt cause the light to stay on constantly though ?

Yeah, it show's that the battery is not charging.

 

As Dan said mate, the light would stay on to show that the battery's not charging.

 

Even with the ignition off and the keys out, the battery light would still stay on to show its fooked ? There still seems loads of power in the battery

Ive been out and had a look at the wires, nothing seems bare or shorting out anywhere but the alt is definitely noisy.

Theres the main power wire to the alt, and then a small blue wire that goes on a seperate connector, when i remove the blue one the light goes off.

Ive just checked my 3 spare alternators, ones erst, ones off something ?? lol and the third one is the same as the 2i.........but its seized solid

Im sick of cars might buy myself a bus pass.

 

Deffo sounds like a fooked alternator mate, the light could be staying on because it might be shorting out inside the alternator??

The only thing to do really is change it & see if that sorts it out.
