Sage Instant Accounts software that is.

I'm fairly proficient on it, but need some help with something to do with networks.

Good lad.

I have been using Sage for a while, so I am fairly familiar with it.

I have just installed it onto our new Server and 2 Workstations. I now need the 2 Workstations to read/write to the main Data (Accounts) folder held on the Server. So that we can use Sage on any of the 3 machines and all have the ability to make changes.

I'm not sure if it is a function in Sage or a case of sharing the file over the network. I have tried lots and although I can see some Data on all machines (not up to date though), it cannot be changed globally on the Workstations. Make sense?

I have managed to set the main accounts folder so that is visible all over the network, but that's as far as I can get.

You should be able to specify the location of the ACCDATA folder on the 2 standalone machines as being on the server when you opened Sage for the first time on the standalone PC's.

Be carefull though as because Instant is not a network version of Sage you should only have 1 person working on the data at once.

CheeRS, I will try that.

We actually have a 2-user license, does that make a difference?

You technically need a 3 user licence, 1 each for the workstations & 1 for the server.

Don't know how much difference that will make though. I THINK you should be OK but will only be able to have 2 of the 3 open at once.

One thing I will say though is that Sage is a PITA some times when it comes to networking.

As long as you've installed it on the server 1st then restored the backup before installing on the workstations & trying to connect to the server you should be alright though.

We actually will very rarely need to access Sage on the Server, so a maximum of 2 machines at once should be enough. I aimagine that Sage doesn't need to be open on the Server for data to still be written to its Accounts folder?

I actually managed to get Sage to talk to me briefly last week, although they aren't supposed to, not having their cover and got snippets of info from them, including, surprisingly an update patch!!

I actually have it fully up and running on the server with the correct data. They told me to set it up on the Workstations with dummy data to get into the program, then restore a backup file on those machines. I have done that, but still cannot get it to reference the main Accounts file.

I am guessing that I might try and uninstall the program from the Workstations and see if there is a better option to try in the install.

I can't belive Sage told you that, it's complete bollocks!

I would uninstall the programs from the workstations then from within Windows explorer delete the Sage folder from within program files as Sage doesn't automatically delete the company data folder.

Then re-install Sage onto the workstations, when you go into Sage for the 1st time one of the initial set-up steps will be to specify whether you wish to connect to an existing data source or create new data.

You want to connect to an existing data source (should be the bottom option). Next to the option you should be able to browse to the data so browse to the ACCOUNTS or ACCDATA folder (can't remember which one Instant uses) on the server, make sure Sage is not open on the server 1st though.

This should work, let me know

What you're saying makes a whole lot more sense to be honest.

Also, I am VERY familiar with deleting the files manually, I have lost count of how many times I have done this now!!

They were talking about mapping network drives etc. I have tried all that.

Will try it now and let you know how it goes.
