Default wheres all the fuel going ???

HELP .......

I have not long bought a R plate escort ghia estate 1.8 Zetec, which has only covered 53000 miles.

Ive had the car looked at as its using lots of fuel, im getting about 22.mpg which was 220 miles to a full tank costing me £40 (ouch), this i feel is a little excesive for this kind af car

Can anyone help me to sort this out by previous experences

I would appriciate all the help i can get as im doing about 300 miles a week and at this rate it will be easier to scrap it

Thank you

Mark

my mondeo was 1.8 zetec and on a run it would get something like 400-450 off 50 quid

around town (with exhuast blowing it would get 300ish to 50 quid.

the lotus is 1.8 and gets 300ish to 31quid

and thats flat out and going back and forth work

so my advice sell the escort and get a lotus

i would suggest that you interrogate the ecu for fault codes. your lambda sensor may be broken.

and take off those lead filled boots

Thanks for the advise guys

Ive also got a 1.8 turbo golf and that gets about 35ish mpg with some heavy foot driving,

I never bought the escort to be better on fuel, but i was realy suprised when it drank a full tank in 200 miles

so sounds like i deffo got a problem then......just a case of trying to find it

Dose not seem to be missfiring, altho it dose have a hicup evernow and then but its not offten at all.

i spose that could be a lead

If i have to describe how the car drives i would say it feels like its a lasy engine and i have to work it to make it go, sort of like its resisting, dose not want to rev, so im thinking now a cat has been mentioned that it could be somthing to do with that, are these engines normaly like this?
or am i too used to the free reving golf?

Hi i am new to all this forum stuff but here goes . A work colleague had a 1.6 estate and he said he anly got 27 mpg back and fore to work was a bit better on a run . I had a 1.6 festa si drivng it like miss daisey got 35 out of it . 2 mate at work have 1.8 gti and the one reckons he can get 35 out it but i am no sure on that one . Whats your driving style like . you say the engine is lazy . Are the filters new plugs clean new old , do they have the right gap your cat may be blocked . if your engine cant breath then you will use fuel i hope you sort it or your can by a diesel and run it on veggie oil like i do but thats another story ?

Cheers guys

Tis a petrol 1.8 zetec, if it was a diesel i would be even more surprised

I will stick a set of genuine ford plugs in it at the weekend (or b4 if i get chance), do you recon it would be worth changing the leads as well?

If that dont seem to work i will see about removing or replacing the cat.
