Default ap vs brembo question

prob been asked before but im just curious

i know ap's are regarded the best but if so why do nearly all car companies use brembos including rally teams and fi teams ?

the only cars i know use ap's are tvr's whereas companies using brembo include

seat, fiat, peugeot, ford, mitsi, scooby, alfa, mercs, jags, land rover and more that i have forgotten

is just ap's cost more ?

there are many variants of these calipers, the road versions and the race versions are completly differant, especially those cheap crap brembos you see on all the production cars, they are not as good as the production ap's as found on the seat ibiza cupra etc etc

depends on how you mean 'better' personally i rate the ibiza cupra much higher than the leon, espcially in performance and more stable/better feel under braking with the ap's

and bal - sorry dont do shonky 'old' cars pal

Going back to the AP Vs Brembo discussion, if you don't know Brembo purchased AP Racing about 4-5 years ago. And it seems that now it's all down to marketing where you see each of the brands being used!!!

It's all down to brand management now, and from what I have seen on the new Brembo racing equipment, you will begin to see more and more Brembo branded racing products which have historically been in the AP Racing category.

Pratically speaking though, both brands are excellent and between them you will be able to find a product that will suite your purpose.

The brembos on the misubishi are spot on when the car is standard but when the engine is tuned you are best going to AP's as the brembos are no good

That was from a guy that tunes Jap cars http://www.system-r.co.uk/ and he had the following car in ready for the change

There is no comparison between OEM equipment that comes with the car as standard and aftermarket racing items even if they are branded Brembo. There are too many compromises and cost savings involved when specifying components on new cars.

However, if you check out Brembo's website, you will also see comparable after market calipers and kits which perform much better than the standard OEM items that were fitted as standard.

Just remember not all Brembo's are made equal!!! Which also stands true for AP Racing calipers too!!! [/quote]

so from reading the comment about the mitsi brembos, will focus rs calipers be good enough to stop a 330 brake saph ?

surely the focus calipers must be an improvement on standard fourbie calipers ?

What you must also remember is to match the calipers with decent pads and discs too! The caliper is only as good as the friction/force it can apply to the disc......

i think the reason alot of people presume AP's are better than brembo's are beacuse of this:

people upgrade say on evo's from standard brembo's to an AP kit is generally for the fact that Brembo dont do an off the self kit that bolts onto an Evo. Its the same company your buying from, so why does it matter to them.

Why make 2 kits for the same car, when you can make 1.

no kit is better than the other in my opinion as vary rarley due u see the same idenitcal spec'd kit for the same car for a comparison.

your talking about comparing standard production brakes, which are generally smaller to racing brakes with larger disc diametres.

Chalk and cheese

Just a shame there is not a brake guide covered in a mag ect. as that would be a very interesting read all the different calipers/ disc's/ pads, covered on the same spec car the mags should have bigger budgets to cover this

just because ap own brembo and vice versa doesnt mean there run as the same entity, each will have a marketing manager, each will have targets to meet each year and each will have a separate production line. its still a business after all. and did i not say earlier that like for like road caliper for road caliper the ap is still a better caliper.

I used the TVR AP's on my 380bhp 2wd Saph with 300mm AP discs and it stops on a pin head now. Ive driven skylines with brembos and they didnt seem as good but that could be different pads, fluid or just the weight of the car.
