Default wireless network help

I was asked round to a friends house today in order to set up their wireless bits and pieces,

they connect to NTL Broadband thru a cable modem, (connected via USB) I was given a router with built in wireless and a wireless device so that the PC upstairs can connect to the internet,

I have coneected the router to the NTL modem, and the PC upstairs has had the wireless card installed and alls good, security has been disabled on both the router and card, (so no WEP is needed at this point etc) but the PC wont connect to the internet, It deffo does see the Router tho and connection is execellent. IS there summit i have done wrong?

You have connectivity but you will need to set the router up. Usually there is a wizard that will do it for you if you go into the router software (drop the ip of the router into a web browser)

Good luck.

To setup you need to do the following:

Turn off the modem and the router.

Turn on modem and wait for 2 mins. This gives the modem time to get an IP address from NTL

Now turn the router on and wait for 2 mins. This should then pick up the IP address that the modem has picked up.

Then go to the PC's and connect up.

This is what I had to do. Its not listed on the NTL website anywhere. I picked it up from a forum board.

do what adrian says

if he's using a stand alone cable modem you need to let the modem reset when plugging it into a new device (as it locks onto the mac address when it boots up)

i had a similar problem with mine (i ended up cloning the mac off of my PC's network card tho as i didnt realise all i had to do was reboot the modem!)

if you're using a set top box then you will have to clone the mac address of the network card of the PC it was registered with. these work different to the stand alone modems

your issue is what I was getting.

Doing what I done above sorted mine.

Give it a try. You got nothing to lose.
