Mercury Poisining From Canned Tuna?
I'm loving this at the moment. I've been taking two cans opened into a container into college and eating it for my lunch along with some barm cakes. I also eat it when I come home and before I go. However, I've been reading up and I am hearing more and more about mercury poisining.
Should I be concerend?
Would you have to eat loads?
Is it just in the cheap tuna? I eat the princess stuff so it's good.
I've read from it being none existant to the other end of the scale, which is death. The internet is so confusing.
Benni.

I'll forget about it then. I'm not even sure what it is, so I might already have it. In fact, I could already be dead. LOL. Cheers,
P.S How's my new diet coming along? I'm looking forward to starting it.
Benni.

I used to work for a food research ascoation (CCFRA), I actually created some foreign body analysis software about 15 years ago for them, so this is kind of similar to what we used to do, my advice is ignore everything on the internet except the UK government info, it genuinely does tend to be correct.
UK Government advice here mate:
http://www.food.gov.uk/multimedia/faq/mercuryfish/
Key bit:
It then goes on to talk later on about the fact that that advice has a massive safety margin built in anyway.
I dont think that being cheap or expensive will make any difference, its not a product of poor handling of the fish or similar, its simply the fact that the fish in the wild are polluted with it to begin with.

Can I still eat tuna?
Yes, everyone can eat tuna. But the mercury that it contains means that the Agency is advising that if you are pregnant or intending to become pregnant, you shouldn’t eat more than four medium-sized cans or two fresh tuna steaks per week.

I eat the cheap stuff so I will be dead before you Benni. 2 tins a day.
There are a lot of foods like this that all get tested at the point of import by the Health authorities or Defra etc. For example Figs carry carcinogenics (cancerous agents) and are tested. Fish is highly tested with exams on every import. The way its caught, the factory that processes it and the importers all have to be registered, the tins have to have the correct labelling to the health certificate etc etc or it all goes to the landfill. I used to import lots of tuna for the likes of Morrisons and Princess and it was handy as I used to get 2.5Kgs tins from out of the warehouse. Long time ago now which is a shame
