Default '03 Fiesta clutch problem

Hi,

My wife has just called me saying the clutch is on it's way out on her car, it has the 1.3 duratec engine NOT the 1.25 zetec.

The clutch pedal just goes to the floor and then next time it's OK.

I don't even know if it's a cable or hydraulic clutch. If it's hydraulic then I guess it could be low on fluid but if anyone has any other suggestions I'd appreciate it. I did check the fluid a week ago when I serviced it and it was fine...

When it works it's OK, no odd noise or anything like that, just the pedal goes to the floor..

So things to think of :

low fluild
slave cylinder
master cylinder..

She's gonna call me later when she's back at the car and I just want to have a few things I can ask her to check before she trys to get home.

I suppose my main concern is that if it's losing fluid and it's a shared reservoir with the brakes then at some point the brakes may fail..

are these like the focus with the slave cyclinder mounted inside the bell housing ??

Any input appreciated.

thanks

They're hydraulic on those mate.

May be worth checking where the clutch master cylinder pushrod connects to the pedal as they have a tendency to disconnect themselves from the pedal as they were never fitted with any kind of clip from new. Ford had a few issues with this so released a clip to fit to the pedal to stop it coming off.

Have a look and see if it's there, if not, pm me your address and I'll send you one as I keep loads on board in my van.

If it's not that, it's more than likely going be the master cylinder playing up.

Don't know on these but on other models they share the brake master cylinder? So a tell tale sign can be if the brakes are playing up as well, I would personally think it's the slave cylinder assuming there is no air in the system.

there was a call out note for these a few years ago you had to change the circlip on the clutch pedal.

as above, the master falls off the top of the clutch pedel, the circlip keeps it in place.

cheers guys.

The clutch still works but when the pedel goes to the floor it clicks so it certainly sounds like something mechanical with the pedal rather than any hydraulic problem..

I'll take a look when she gets home..

Kitchen Devil Thanks for the offer of a clip as well, I'll let you know if I need one.

you won't loose your brakes mate as they both feed off the brake fluid reservoir but teh feed for the clutch sits higher up so you won't ever loose brakes!

Hi, you have a PM.

The push rod has just slipped off the end of the pin on the pedal and there's no clip.....

Thanks everyone for your help....
simple fix in the end..

Diden't mean in terms of loss of breaks, but if say there is air in the system this will be reflected in both!
