Default Fuel Problems

Hi guys, I've got an Escort Mk6 1996 1.4i 55kw . My car only has 70 000km on the clock, but started getting very heavy on fuel and sluggish. I service it every 5000km, and my dad did the cambelt about 2000km ago / 2 years ago, I don't use it very often. I think it might be the Fuel pressure regulator, when I pull the vacuum pipe off it makes NO difference to the idling. Do you think it is the Fuel Pressure Regulator or can it be the Fuel pump that just does not give enough fuel pressure. I have an aftermarket FPR but it does not fit on this car. Usually FPR are fitted on the Fuel return, does this one also work like that. I'll appreciate help on this, because a new FPR is quite expensive, as after marker FPR does not fit.

Measure the fuel pressure before guessing. 2 tests, one at either side of the reg will soon enough tell you if it the pump or FPR if you are seeing low pressure
