Default Detailing for dummies - a beginners guide please. now with pics, first effort!

Ok, to start. Back in march i bought a 2001 Impreza UK300. It had some paintwork done just prior to me buying it and some of the lacquer is a bit dull so i want to cut it back and get it all nice and shiny, also to remove swirls and the odd light scratch.

But i am very new to this and dont quite know how to go about it!

What i have done so far is:

Snowfoam with autoraechem cherry snow foam and rinse
Wash with dodojuice sour power shampoo, rinse
Claybar

Thats where im at now.
Next step is to order some gtechnic p1 polish and get a rotary polisher, but what pads to you use for what?

Im looking at these from toolstation but dont know what i need to apply the p1 with, and what to remove it with

http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Powe.../sd2694/p11874

http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Powe.../sd2694/p21642

http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Powe.../sd2694/p33265

Next after that is to wax? I have some dodojuice blue velvet, so would that be applied by hand, then buffed with a lambswool bonnet on the polisher?

For the wheels, i have some carpro iron x, so lash that on and jet off, tar remover, clay, clean with ipa and then ill buy some cquartz wheel stuff as per the other wheel sealer thread, i understand that comes with the aplicator pad.

Does this sound ok?

As for the p1 polishing, do you use the blue tape on the panel edges to stop you taking all the paint off the egdes of them?
A step by step how to would be good if anyone can take the time.

My mate had his frs professionly done, and the finish looks like glass and is very slick to touch, im after a similar result but not sure if you get that feel just from a wax?

I also have the missus cmax to do, so cant justify £700 to have both cars done properly, and gonna have to diy it!

Any help and info will be great thanks chaps

Buy a D/A rather than a rotary if you've never used one before, much safer

cheers mate, without trying to sound stupid lol, what is the difference between the DA and just a polisher?
they both spin round and you can adjust the speed lol
the other one i was considering is this, similar price so could go for either, i just dont know the difference

although that clarke one is a fair bit heavier at 5kg

*Stolen from detailing world
The random orbit nature of a dual action polisher means that it generates far less heat than a rotary polisher. It is a more gentle tool so correction work typically takes longer. However it is also safer to use and easier to learn which makes it the ideal beginners’ tool.

Owing to their nature, where the pad spins on a constant orbit, a rotary polisher can develop significant heat on the paintwork which can lead to paint burns in the hands of an inexperienced user.

By contrast, a dual action polisher is a much safer tool to simply pick up and use. By dual action, it means that the pad not only spins in a circle, but it also oscillates. This results in a random orbit movement of the pad – sometimes such polishes are referred to as “Random-Orbit” polishers (RO polishers) for this reason. The diagram highlights the difference between the pad motion of a rotary and a dual action polisher
Basically a DA is a lot safer and doesn't rotate constantly over the same area, it's almost impossible to damage the paint using one of these. Also on your steps above, I would go over the car with Tardis before I used a clay bar, it's much much easier doing it like that, it will remove most of the shit then you can go over it with the bar after.

Cheers for the info chaps. that DA above says its takes longer to polish? just how much longer are we talking, as time is one thing i dont have a great deal of.

as as for the rotary, as long you keep it moving it will be ok wont it?

say i get that DAS-6 as per above and the red pad to apply the P1, what do you take it off with? just wipe it off with microfibre towels or buff off with a lambswool?

also, what step after polishing, just wax or is there somethign else you would use before hand?

both cars i want to do are daily drivers, if that makes any difference?

cheers boys

I have been trying to read up on it and seen a pretty good video earlier.

Right, my mate has a rotary i can borrow, but its not a DA. He used to work in the business and is happy for me to borrow it, or for him to do it.

So i might just get a new backing plate and some pads and give it a go.

I cant really afford a DA at the mo, and i only have 2 cars to use it on, so i doubt it will get much use.

Fingers crossed i dont fuck it up lol... Ill report back when i have ordered some stuff and had a crack at it.

Cheers chaps

update... i was asked to take a mates lad to his prom tonight, so this last week i have been busy!

so in the end, i bought a backing pad, and a set of 3 dodo juice fin pads, orange, green and black.

i done most of the cutting with the green pad as i dont want to just go for it with the orange and fook it up!

it was done over a few days as i just dont have time to do it all in one hit.

so, the car was foamed with auto raechem cherry foam
lanced off
washed with dodo juice sour power
lanced off
clayed
tar removed
washed
dried
then cut with the rotary , green pad, gtechnic P1

now, i found that unless i used loads of P1 it just went dry and didnt machine at all, so i had to use a fair bit of the P1 to get it to cover... this resulted in it spraying the shit everywhere and it was a right fooker to get off!
i didnt machine the boot lid or the passenger side due to the tie of night/kids in bed etc so ended up doing those by hand. there are still the odd RDS in there but it seems to have got rid of the swirl marks which was what i was after.

next i polished, again mostly by the rotary with autoglym deep gloss polish as i already had it.
then waxed with dodo juice blue velvet

i have not had time yet to take the wheels off and do them properly so they have only had iron x and lancing. they came up ok as ive been using the iron x every time i wash it.
but when i do get the wheels off i will clean with iron x, lance, tar remove, clay bar, and seal with cquartz dlux, i have already bought this just not had time to use it.

oh, cleaned the glass with autoglym glass polish and then i think were done!

so, some pics: (only iphone pics im afraid!)

just keep the thing moving lol.

the one i used, if you had it on it lowest speed setting, even under its own weight would stop it rotating, so you had to kind of ease the pressure a bit to get it going. once the polish was spread out a bit you could up the speed and it was ok.

took a while to get the hang of tho!

next up is the wifes cmax took fooking aaaaages to do the scoob lol

Looks good mate

I'd be too scared to use one of those machine polishers aswell.

Becareful if your using a wheel cleaner, a lot of the crap ones have loads of acid, no good for your wheels.
