budget machine polisher
Got a black ST170, went over it with meguirers scratch x but still has lots of swirl marks, and in the sun has lots of ghosting marks.
Looking at a budget machine polisher, would this do?

That's the main problem, the cheap ones run far too fast.
I have this and would recommend it so so highly.

Yes it's a lot more expensive, but not that bad considering it really is the very best on the market. That price is the best on the 'net too (taking into account the free delivery)

We haven't had anywhere near the number of reported issues with the revised 2nd generation units so the problems were clearly identified and fixed.
Also consider the Kestrel DAS-6, which is very much like the G220 in terms of size, and operation.
However, those ^^ are both random orbit machines and the OP's initial suggested machine was a rotary (as was the Makita that was recommeded). Totally different types of machine polishers with their own specific working methods and techniques.
Silverline do a very good budget spec rotary which is used by quite a few members on DW and as far as I know, there aren't any problems with regards to lack of torque, and one of them has the 600 rpm start speed, which is what you want really (they do a couple at around the same price).

Over 1500 G220's sold in the last 21 months, and only a 3% fail rate, with all warranty work being handled brilliantly and quickly by Meguiars. The reality is they are good machines, with the odd bad one that gets quickly sorted under warranty. The Kestrel DAS-6 is another good choice, with similar performance and warranty terms.
