Servers
I was hoping that someone could help me with this, I want to start a company that hosts websites, not big BIG website, (type of web hosting like e.g. fourms and stuff like that) Now the problem is that, I want the sever here with me (@ home), what sever would be ideal, coz i've spoke to a few companys and they have turned round saying that they keep my sever at a data centre and i pay a lease to keep it there, also they say its not possible for me to take my sever out the rack and take it home, i have been pointed to that Dell sell severs and that they shipped it to my address, is this true, +ive had a look at there severs and i cant quite find the one that does web hosting.
oh and if you do know how to set up a sever from home that will host website, then just give me a breife insight in how i go bout doing it,
i do know that it need to be connected to the internet 24/7 which now day isnt hard
got any recomodations to severs i should be looking at that would be really helpful,
cheers

Servers are easy to have at home. My mate has a small server tower with a whole bunch of hard drives in it (can't remember how many, but it's about 1000gig I think) in his home to which a bunch of us are hooked into via FTP. Really it's just data storage - movies, pics, mp3's, software etc.....
But to have a pro server at home, I dunno.... Proper servers are pretty expensive kit I think - getting it all installed and set up might cost a pretty penny!!!

Depending on how many "customers" you'd want to have on it, you'd need to have a LOT of memory (to deal with all the website-requests - all of our webservers in work have 8GB of ECC (not cheap) RAM), quite a decent amount of storage space (if you're planning on having quite a few customers, you'll probably want to look into a disk-array - 16-shelf array, each with a 400GB SATA drive in it, gives you 6.25TB of storage space), and PLENTY of upstream-bandwidth on whatever connection you're planning on hosting it on (don't even consider hosting it on anything with less than 1Mbps of UPSTREAM bandwidth, if you're planning on having more than a few customers on it).
Once you've sorted the hardware, then you need to think about the software......are you going to stick with Windows, IIS, etc etc, or are you going to go for the more popular (for servers, anyway) Linux, with Apache/etc?

Oh, and if you're on a budget, don't consider rack-mount servers (the proper stuff).
A proper entry-level decent-spec rack-mountable server (ie. 8GB ECC memory, 2x3.6GHz Xeon processors, 3x400GB SATA) will set you back about Ł4k from the place I normally order kit from in work...

What you'd need to do to host a website would completely depend on whether you wanted to use Windows or Linux.
Plus, if you're dedicated about doing this, I'd suggest a month or two HEAVY reading up on web-server security for whichever operating-system you're going to be using......the last thing you want is to get a few customers then have someone hack an exploit and take everything down.
And, normally, the server will come with nothing installed (maybe Windows, if you take that option), you'll need to install everything you want to use yourself.
