what would i need to make it work? any idea's???
I have an Asus A8n-sli which has a Nvidia Nforce 4 Gigabit Ethernet onboard.........
if that helps (p.s. i dont know what that means, but its what it says in the manual)....

Ok, so ive been reading up on Ethernets.
And it appears i have a gigabit ethernet built in, so how do i connect it up, to be able to do what you've suggested above???
What other parts would i need?

Basically, you have a network card on your motherboard. I use a cable modem which basically connects to my pc via a network cable. The benefit of a router, is that you connect the cable modem to the router which keeps your internet connection alive, and then connect however many pc's you want to it. I have a linksys 4 port wireless router / hub on my desk
Dan,
So how would that work for me???
I still need a modem do i???
or a router/modem???
If i was to connect the ethernet connection from my MB, to what would i connect it???
And how does this finally connect to the Phone line???
I dont fully understand all this router stuff.............

just re read what you've said.......
do you mean, i'd need a cable modem that would connect directly to the ethernet connection on my MB???
Then this modem would connect as normal to the phone line through the filter???

Thanks for the reply,
Is there any differences in performance between the 2 above, other than (im guessing) with the router you'd be able to connect other computers???
if not, then im guessing the bottom one would be cheaper as it only needs 1 extra cable (crossover) and the modem. is that right???
if that is the case, what do you recommend as a good modem for this???
And can you explain how this avoids the problems with XP64 drivers???
is is because the ethernet onboard has 64 bits drivers for it already???
if so, how about the modem, will it need 64bit drivers???
Sorry, alot of questions i know but if i can sort this problem out it will be the end to the ear bashing i keep getting off the other half for not being able to connect via BB..........
Cheers

I don't know if this is of any relevance since I ain't got a clue wht you guys are on about but...
When I first got Broadband, Fresserve sent me this green thing, which apparently was my broadband modem Plug from phone socket on wall the modem, then modem connected to PC via a USB cable.
When we got a new PC and I decided I wanted to share the net connection, I bought one of these;

Safecom 4port router modem - £40 off ebuyer.com
New PC had a 10/100 LAN port built in, so cat 5 cable connected that up to port one, then ran a cat 5 patch cable upstairs to old PC (installed a 10/100 LAN PCI card in it and plugged in)
All I did to connect to the net was go into the router settings, and input my internet account details (actually I didn't, my mate did as I am crap with this stuff
) Then each PC automatically found the net connection and has been fine ever since (bar a couple of times when I have had to reboot the router, other than that it has been spot on - never had to "sign in" like I used to do, all works lovely
