The architecture on the PS4 is x86 - PC type based - where as the PS3 was Cell based so they're not compatible.

A sacrifice for the sake of increasing processor speeds I'd imagine.

Yeah, they're doing something along those lines with COD Ghosts, if you have the PS3 edition, you can upgrade for a tenner to PS4 version.

It was an own goal from sony using cell for ps3 in the first place. Would have been much better and easier for game developers to create on a more versatile basis. But I don't think it's too much of a bad thing. Just like the majority of ps3 couldn't play ps2 games. You won't want to retro play games with the latest technology coming through. And if you did they'll be available on line. But the fact that Sony decided against the move to irradiate the pre owned games market makes them consumer friendly, not that everyone will be pleased by what they do but on the whole they've listened and learned from opinions in the whole.
The bricking situation should have been learnt along time ago! And not just by Sony. Remember WiiU users

sony claim eventually they will have something for this, microsoft have come out and claim they now wont, even though a while back they said they might. They now say it would be too hard and not stable enough to warrant it.
