it seems that all my media on one of our computers now has been designated "open with vlc player" with no other options to be able to open it with anything else

so, the obvius question is, how do i return to them being playable with windows media player or quicktime or the like?

my brother sends me loads of home videos and it's been a bit of a pain int he arse to have to download them on my phone, then send them to my old dear because it won't download or play on her computer

Find a file you want to play, right click on it, choose 'open with', 'choose default program', click WMP. Done.

download cccp will let you play any type of extention ie .mov .divx .mkv in what ever media player thats on the pc

Ive tried the "open file with" but that only gives me the option to open with Firefox or vpl

All the media files I have won't now work unless they have that silly little orange traffic cone symbol

I suspect you have Windows XP?

Else you would have been able to set this with the 'Open with'.

You need to set the program default, one place you will see this option is in Control Panel, on the left select WMP and then click 'Set this program as default'.

This is the best way to do this, otherwise you have to go through and set the file associations.

Try right clicking one of your files, clicking properties, then change the 'open with' to WMP.

Expand the 'other programs' (using the arrow ), if it is not here you will need to browse program files/wmp directory and then select the executable, as said.

My way is better though, as this will change it for all file types, whereas doing it this way changes that file type only.

Download or buy software called Xillisoft video converter. You can convert any video file to any file you want, use it for converting files to play on my TV and put onto my phone when its not supported. Great bit of software and i use it all the time.

i shall figure out a way to do it eventually, but until then, fuck it

That doesn't solve this problem, it simply installs another program.

Media PLAYER, not Media CENTRE, lol.
